The South African Institute of Canada

We know what it’s like to leave behind your entire network, your comfort zone, and your cultural roots to start over in a new country. It’s exhilarating, yes—but also disorienting, exhausting, and, at times, lonely. The Institute exists to make that transition easier and to build a sense of home and belonging for South Africans across Canada.

While the expat journey often starts with visas and work permits, the real story begins after you land—when you’re trying to find a school for your kids, understand your tax obligations, get your first car insured, and figure out why everyone keeps calling it a “washroom.” That’s where we step in. Through a growing number of programs, events, digital resources, and community initiatives, the Institute helps South Africans rebuild the personal and professional networks they had back home—without the isolation that often accompanies starting over.

One of our most exciting initiatives is Howzit Canada, a national platform dedicated to helping South Africans in Canada reconnect with the things—and people—that feel like home. Whether you’re looking for a biltong supplier in British Columbia, a South African hairdresser in Toronto, or a potjie competition in Calgary, Howzit Canada is where the trail begins. And yes—if you’re wondering where to find your favourite things like Mrs Ball’s chutney, Ouma rusks, boerewors, or biltong, that’s exactly the kind of help we offer.

The platform features directories of South African-owned businesses, upcoming events, community WhatsApp groups, job resources, and more—all curated with the goal of helping expats find their people, their flavour, and their footing. What sets it apart is not just the content but the spirit behind it. It’s proudly South African, but it’s also proudly Canadian—rooted in helping people make this country truly feel like home, rather than clinging to a version of what they left behind.

The South African Institute of Canada is powered entirely by volunteers, many of whom are expats themselves. From legal advisors and graphic designers to event planners and admin support, the team reflects the best of what happens when a community decides to build something together. We’re not here to recreate South Africa in Canada—we’re here to build a new story with familiar voices in a new land.

And while our programs serve practical needs, they’re really about something deeper: trust, belonging, and mutual support. Whether it’s helping someone navigate their first Canadian winter, find a culturally sensitive therapist, or simply share a laugh over a pack of Ouma rusks, the Institute is a place where no question is too small and no one has to feel alone.

So, what makes us different? It’s not just what we do—it’s how we do it. With heart. With humour. And with the understanding that immigration isn’t a transaction; it’s a transformation. We’re here to walk that journey together.
