How to Customize WordPress Theme for Beginners

One of the most popular CMS or content management systems you will find is WordPress. More than one-third of the internet is currently running on WordPress. One of the key reasons for the popularity is exceptional flexibility. You can use the CMS to create and customize almost any type of website including an individual blog or a much larger-scale site. The way to start is to find a theme you associate with that works well with your brand.

From there, you can start your customization for the creations of a unique website. To be successful, you need to understand how your WordPress theme can be customized to perfectly align with your brand. Before you can understand how to customize a theme in WordPress, you need to understand the basics. The WordPress platform enables you to handle customizations simply and easily within the platform. When you work with WordPress, you do not customize the core.

You will be making your edits using what is commonly referred to as a WordPress theme. This is simply a collection of CSS stylesheets and templates you can use for the creation of a unique design. Many of the themes available through WordPress also offer a collection of templates. A template is a version of a theme pre-built with specific changes, theme settings and customizations already in place. Everything is dependent on the theme you choose.

A good example is the themes offering dozens of templates for you to install. You can choose from a wide variety of configurations until you find the right look for your website. You need to understand the terms WordPress template and WordPress theme are essentially interchangeable. How to customize WordPress theme is dependent on the template and configuration you select for your site.

Choose and Customize a Theme in WordPress

The information in this article will teach you how to customize your WordPress theme. Before you can begin customization, you need to find a theme with a design you are pleased with. This will eliminate the need to make any major structural changes later on. You will have a style capable of bringing your brand to life. There are three major considerations in choosing your WordPress theme detailed below.

Selecting a Quality WordPress Theme

How to customize WordPress themes for beginners begins with eliminating any template with poor coding. This will negatively impact the performance of your website and you will be vulnerable to hackers. Even if you find a theme with an incredible design, it will not make any difference if it does not load. You do not need to look at every codebase individually. Even if you did, you would most likely not know what you were looking for.

Your best option is to look for theme providers doing business for many years. Poor quality themes generally fade away as time passes. Take the time to read the user reviews. If most of the reviews are negative, find a different theme. If you see a lot of positive reviews regarding the quality, you can usually assume using the theme is a good choice. You can also find a lot of themes available through the WordPress library. For example, TheGem has four-hundred templates and is highly recommended on WordPress:

Understanding Your Requirements

Just because a theme is ideal for someone else does not mean it is right for your website. Before you start your search for the perfect theme, consider the type of features you require, your brand and your individual needs. A good example is a theme created for an eCommerce store. The features will be completely different than a theme designed for a lawn care portfolio. WordPress enables you to locate themes created for specific market niches including:

  • Restaurants
  • Attorneys
  • Bloggers
  • Boutique shops
  • Accountants

Here is an example of a theme only meant for businesses selling jewelry:

If you do not find a theme for your specific niche, you can use an all-in-one template. This will enable you to make the customizations necessary for your business. You can always add additional features with a plugin.

Quality Support

When you consider how to customize your WordPress theme, remember the importance of a responsive and dedicated support team. Make certain there is a support method suitable for your needs. The most common types of support are live chat, email and phone. You will most likely not receive the same level of support when you use a free theme. You can check WordPress forums to determine how often user requests receive a response.

In addition to support, make certain your WordPress theme is consistently updated. As WordPress continues to evolve, your theme will require patches, updates and bug fixes to stay functional. Once you understand how WordPress works and have chosen a good theme, you can begin your customization.

Information Necessary to Customize a WordPress Theme

Before learning how to customize my WordPress theme, consider the assets of your brand. You need to have a solid theme in place to create your website quicker while eliminating errors such as mismatching colors. If your brand is neon pink, you do not want to use a bright orange background because the colors do not match properly and tend to blend together. You should have certain design elements in place before proceeding including:

  • A completed logo in different sizes and versions is helpful depending on the requirements of your theme.
  • Make a list of the specific colors you intend to use for your site including the HEX code.
  • All graphics and images you will be using for your website.

You also need to have a basic concept for the appearance of your website. Consider a scrolling homepage in a parallax-style, which side you want your menu on, the placement of your header and a full-page slider beneath your logo. All of the above are customization options for your website. You can find design elements and trends by looking at some of the websites of your competitors. Make certain the theme you choose aligns with your design from the beginning to avoid any major changes later on.

How Do I Customize My WordPress Theme and Templates?

Before you ask how do I customize my WordPress theme, remember there is a wide range of different options available. The most common methods to edit a WordPress website are detailed below. These options are 100 percent beginner-friendly with no coding or design skills necessary for customization.

Using the WordPress Customizer

A built-in tool is included with WordPress called Customizer. You can use this tool for customizing your website without any changes required for your site’s code. Although this is not an in-depth tool for customization, you can make simpler customizations including making changes to your layout, logo and color scheme. To access Customizer, go to your WordPress dashboard then navigate to Appearance>Customize. For instance:

After you have clicked on Customizer and opened the tool, you will see a menu on the left of your screen. This shows which elements of your website can be edited. The elements of your site will be different depending on the theme you have selected. For the majority of themes, the following elements can be changed.

General Layout

This is where you can customize numerous aspects of your layout including headers, sidebars and navigation. You can also change the appearance and size of your layout elements.

Title and Logo

You can change the tagline for your website, upload your logo and customize the size in this section.

Menus

Your options include adding new menus for your website, creating new menus and deciding where everything will be displayed.

Widget Sections

What you are able to customize in this section depends on your theme. You can customize your widgetized sections and customize them to your liking.

Typography

This is where the typography for your website can be customized. You should only choose a maximum of two fonts for the majority of your site or the impact will most likely be negative.

Color Scheme

You can customize the color scheme for your website in addition to changing the color of your text, background, links, headers and a lot more.

The WordPress Customizer is a powerful tool providing you with the ability to make a lot of changes throughout your website. You will see your customizations in real-time. This enables you to make certain you are pleased before publishing your changes live.

Built-In Options to Customize a WordPress Theme

This customization tool is also dependent on the theme you are using. Certain themes offer built-in options enabling customization of almost every aspect. Others only offer you extreme basics. You need to go to your WordPress dashboard to access the options for your theme. You should see a section on the left of your screen displaying the same name as your installed theme. You can view the available options for customization simply by clicking.

The theme options panel will show the modifications you can make with your chosen theme. The majority of customizations you can make for your website involve either the Elementor plugin or the WordPress Customizer. If you require features not provided with your theme, you can add new features by using plugins.

Making Customizations via CSS

The appearance of your website is controlled by CSS or cascading style sheets. This includes the colors, typography and spacing of your site. The CSS code of your website controls more of its appearance than the core files of your theme. Before you make any changes, make certain you do not change your core CSS file. Making mistakes is easy and can compromise your website’s design. The best way to make changes to your WordPress website is through the Customizer.

Go to your WordPress dashboard and open the Customizer. Near the bottom of your screen you will see Additional CSS. Select this option, then type in your CSS code to start customizing your website. Your changes will appear automatically in your editor. You do not have to use the Customizer. You can also use several different plugins to make CSS changes for your website. There are plugins available enabling customization of your WordPress theme.

Most of the plugins available offer several useful features making it a lot easier for beginners to edit their CSS. Certain plugins offer an inspector tool. This enables you to highlight specific areas of your website. You can also see the specific CSS code you will need to change. Numerous plugins also offer a visual editor. Not only does this allow you to make changes to your CSS, but you can also view them in real-time.

Look for a plugin with an editor offering advanced features. This will assist you in writing clean code without any errors. Once you have chosen the plugin you want to use, it needs to be installed. You can then begin editing your CSS easily and quickly.

Using a Page Builder Plugin

The WordPress plugins offer you the functionality of drag-and-drop. This feature is extremely common for the majority of website builders currently available. This provides beginners with complete control when designing their website. You do not need to know how to use code for this feature.

Your plugin will create the underlying code you require automatically as you rearrange or add different elements to your site. There are a ton of options for page builder plugins available through WordPress. This will enable you to add more functionality to your site. The most frequently used are detailed below.

Elementor Page Builder

The Elementor page builder offers you drag-and-drop functionality and a live preview feature. There is a wide range of different types of features included such as testimonial sections, unique sliders and simple text widgets. The Elementor also provides you with template options already pre-built. You can add them directly to your pages and website. You can customize your website quickly simply by using the pre-built sections.

Divi Page Builder

The Divi plugin is both a page builder and a theme for WordPress. In the past, you could only use the Divi page builder plugin if you were using the Divi theme. This has changed and you can now use the Divi plugin no matter which theme you have chosen. You can use this plugin for all WordPress and third-party themes.

Once the plugin is installed, you will be granted access to a drag-and-drop editor with a lot of power including a built-in responsive design and real-time editing. The Divi plugin also includes a large selection of pre-built modules. You will find complete websites you can customize quickly and easily.

Beaver Builder Plugin

The Beaver Builder is a fast and simple to use plugin for WordPress including a page builder with the drag-and-drop feature. You can customize different elements of your website by dragging them to the editor. The options panel is built-in, enabling you to customize any element. You can create the layout for your website using more than 30 available templates. The plugin is equipped with an extensive variety of elements including:

  • Sliders
  • Content blocks
  • Background options
  • Buttons

You can customize the layout and pages of your website with a drag-and-drop builder as soon as you have finished installing your plugin. Be careful because not every theme is compatible with every plugin. If you are experiencing issues with your plugin, there might be a problem with the compatibility of your theme. If you decide to use a plugin, make certain there is no known compatibility issue with your theme.

No matter which plugin you choose, the functionality is similar. The simplest and easiest option is to use the WordPress Customizer and a theme from the WordPress library. Not only are some of the plugins more difficult to use for beginners, but you will also have to pay a fee for many of them.

Customize the Design for Your WordPress Theme

You should now understand the basics of editing and customizing your WordPress theme for both your website and brand. There is a wide range of options available enabling you to customize your WordPress theme. In answer to the question of how to customize your WordPress theme, it is dependent on your comfort level and existing skills. You might find all you need to do to complete your website is to make a few changes with the Customizer.

Why You Should Create a WordPress Website

For beginners who are creating their first websites, it is important to choose the right website platform. WordPress offers an innovative and versatile platform designed to meet the needs of varied types of websites. Whether you need a business website for your new digital products sales company, blog or job board, WordPress is excellent. If you need a personal interest, crafts or hobby site, this platform is ideal for these purposes as well. Creating a simple website using WordPress is informative and inspiring. Even individuals and SMB owners who are newcomers to site creation can easily succeed.

Most new website creators benefit from choosing a self-hosted site from WordPress.org. It includes virtually thousands of varied designs and diverse add-ons to meet the preferences and requirements of all website creators. By using this WordPress site, you can benefit from the advice and tips of the entire staff of website design professionals. Having helped more than 130,000 individuals and business owners build successful websites, they will gladly do the same for you. You will soon learn all of the major aspects of how to create a website using WordPress for beginners.

As the leading popular platform for websites around the globe, WordPress has produced almost 28 percent of all Internet sites. The fact that users can build a site free of charge is especially attractive to first-time website creators. Thousands of WP site designs and useful extensions are available. In addition, WordPress works smoothly with nearly all third-party features and tools that are now in use by site builders.

Major Differences Between WordPress.org and WordPress.com

If you are new to WordPress, it is important to know that WordPress.org is a Content Management System (CMS). It is recommended by experienced site designers for its versatility, flexibility and many features and options. WordPress.com, however, is a website builder that is best suited for building blogging sites. This is part of the basic information revealing how to create a website using WordPress for beginners.

Website Theme, Overall Design and Customized Options

WordPress.org offers highest degrees of creative control for the site builder. There is no end to its myriad options for themes and customizing your website. If you have coding skills, you can do all of the coding for your site on your own, although this is not necessary. The WordPress.com platform does allow you to make some design adjustments. However, only the higher-priced plans and plugins permit any major site changes or tweaks. Understanding these differences is important when creating a simple website using WordPress.

Free and Paid WordPress Accounts

Both of these WordPress website platforms can be used free of charge for creating a simple website. Yet to get your site built and running with effective power and impact, you will need a paying account. Fortunately, you can select a plan on either site that suits your current budget. Although using WordPress.org generally raises your overall costs for site creation and operation, it is well worth the extra expense.

Steps to Set Up an Effective WordPress Site

The WordPress platform explains how to build a WordPress website step by step. Major steps to enable beginners to create an engaging and effective WordPress website include the following:

Step 1. Purchase a Domain Name

Your domain name is the web address (URL) that Internet users will need to locate your website. For best results, choose a short, concise name that either is your business or website name or resembles it closely. By selecting a name that is easy to remember, you can enable more people to find and visit your site. Here is a breakdown of domain names:

If you are unable to get a .com extension, other acceptable ones are “.net, .org, .co and .us.” Be aware, however, that .net is commonly associated with tech industry companies while .org is in popular use among charities and NGOs. Also, .co is often used by trendy startup companies, and only United States businesses and citizens can use .us.

The majority of domains can be purchased for $20 or less per year. However, a super-premium domain name that pertains to your business and is close to a household name can be costly. It may cost as much as a few thousand dollars, but it can bring your site loads of web traffic. These names can win big via Google searches, but with a less celebrated name and good SEO, your site can triumph.

Step 2. Register with a Hosting Provider

You now have your website address, so you need a location for establishing your site, or a hosting provider. You should look for a hosting provider for your WordPress site that satisfies these requirements:

  • PHP version 7.2 or greater
  • Either MySQL version 5.6 or greater, or MariaDB version 10.0 or greater
  • HTTPS support

Most web development experts recommend Bluehost for hosting WordPress websites, and WordPress agrees. The next step is to choose between shared or managed hosting for your WordPress site. Differences in the two hosting types and some advice concerning making your decision are as follows:

  • Shared WordPress Hosting. With this plan, your website shares a server with other sites, with all sites using the same resources. You will all have a share in the available web traffic capacity (bandwidth) as well as content and media storage. Shared website hosting is the less expensive choice, and it is better for smaller web companies, startups and personal sites.
  • Managed WordPress Hosting. This type of website hosting for WordPress, or dedicated hosting, uses a virtual private server (VPS). It is the best choice for larger personal sites and small to mid-sized businesses (SMBs). Even with this type of hosting provider, you should not need to spend more than about $20 per month for basic services.
  • Advice from Experts. Web hosting experts suggest that you start out with a shared website hosting plan. Later on, your personal interest or company website should be attracting more web traffic. You should gain interested site visitors and new site members or sales conversions for your company products and services. At this point, it will be time to change to a managed WordPress hosting plan.

Steps for Selecting Your Site Hosting Provider

You now see why knowing how to build a WordPress website step by step is valuable. Learning tips concerning selecting the best web host for your site is equally important. Simple steps for choosing the ideal website hosting provider for your WordPress site are as follows:

  1. Visit Your Chosen Hosting Provider’s Homepage. On the homepage of Bluehost as your choice of web hosting providers, open the Hosting dropdown menu. From the menu, select “shared,” “VPS” or “dedicated hosting.” Bluehost and the majority of other website hosts will offer different plans, such as “Basic,” “Choice” and “Choice Plus” at different prices. Since the “Choice Plus” or similar plan offers a free backups feature, this plan is by far the best to select to avoid any unexpected loss of data. Take a look at a few of the hosting plans for Bluehost:

How to create a wordpress website for beginners

If you decide to start with a shared hosting plan, Bluehost offers very cost-effective and dependable ones. Just check the list of features that come with each plan before making your selection. The site’s customer service staff can answer any questions that may arise as you examine the different plans available.

  1. Link Your Personal or Business Domain Name. After selecting your website hosting plan, you will see a prompt to connect the name of your domain. Enter your registered domain name in the appropriate box so that its URL or web address link can be connected.
  2. Create an Account and Enter Your Billing Information. Enter your personal contact details. Next, you need to choose between the yearly or monthly payment plan for your account. In general, making a single payment for the year is less expensive than choosing the monthly payment option. Bluehost and some other hosting providers offer a 30-day money back guarantee to make it easier for you to decide. After entering your billing data and selecting your payment plan, you are ready to install WordPress.

Step 3. Install WordPress for Your Website

Now you are ready to install WordPress. This installation can be performed easily via your hosting page dashboard. Some hosting providers offer simple one-click installation, while others support the manual method.

  • One-Click Installation. Bluehost provides the easy one-click WordPress installation. The majority of hosting companies use dashboards that are standard cPanel like Bluehost uses, so your installation will probably be easy.
  • Manual Installation. When installing WordPress with the manual method, you will download WordPress to your computer. When the download is complete, you will then upload it again to your hosting provider account page. If any questions or issues arise during this process, your hosting provider’s tech team can assist you.

Step 4. Select a Theme for Your Site

You can get creative when choosing a theme for your website. Themes are ready-made design templates, and you can add your own content to them. They provide a foundation that you can edit and tweak to suit your specific site preferences and needs. This is a very important aspect of how to create a WordPress website for beginners. You can examine as many themes as you like before making your final selection. After choosing your theme, just follow these simple steps:

  1. Sign in to your WordPress account dashboard.
  2. Under “Appearance,” click “Themes” to access the theme dashboard.

  1. When the activation tab appears beneath the theme, click “Activate” to start using your site theme. You have now mastered an important aspect of how to create a website using WordPress for beginners.

You can also install a premium theme by downloading its .zip file. Just follow the same procedure as the one used for a regular theme (given above). When you reach the step that says “Add New,” click the blue tab that reads “Upload Theme.” You will receive a prompt to select a .zip file from your computer, allowing you to select and upload your premium theme.

After uploading, you will then receive a link to activate your new theme. Themes are available in a wide range of prices, making it easy to find one that suits your creative tastes and budget. This is another major aspect of how to build a WordPress website step by step.

WordPress instructions will guide you through the process for ensuring that your new site is mobile-friendly. Only when your website is viewable on all digital devices and screen sizes (a responsive site) will it bring you optimal results. This is another valuable tip concerning the best practices to build a WordPress website for beginners.

Step 5. Add Content to Your Site

There are two primary types of textual content on a website, pages and posts. Pages are static content since they remain the same unless you edit them. For example, most websites have an “About Us” page. Often, themes display a site’s different pages in a screen-top navigation bar. By adding the “Pages” widget, you can choose to place the navigation bar at the side of the screen. To add a new page, simply click “Pages” and “Add New.” For example:

Posts are text content that are listed in chronological order of their input on your site. Their listing can appear on the site homepage or on a “blog” page or section. Posts can be input as “sticky posts” if you like, to keep them at the top of the list or page. To add a new post, just click “Posts” and “Add New.” After adding a page or post, you can enter your written content and media (photos or videos). For instance:

Written content should be added in “Text Blocks,” with photos and videos added between these blocks for best results. You can also embed videos from YouTube and other sites along with selected image galleries as collections of thumbnail images. After entering all needed content, click “Publish” to make your post viewable by site visitors. Now you have mastered another aspect of how to create WordPress website step by step.

Step 6. Customize Your Website

Customizing your new website is inspiring and fun. Learning techniques for site customization is important to build a WordPress website for beginners. At this point, you can focus on creating an innovative, unique site presentation by adding or revising specific details. Although you can accomplish this step in various ways, four major ways are the following:

  1. Revise the Site’s Title and Tagline. During the setup process of your new website, the title of your site is auto-set by WordPress to read, “just another WordPress site.” In the Settings tab on your dashboard, under “General,” you can add your website title and input a short site description next to “Tagline.” Be sure to save these changes.
  2. Add Your Site Navigation Menu. A navigation menu is an essential element of your site. It enables your website visitors to easily locate and view all of your site content. To add this menu, click “Menu” under “Appearances.” Input a menu name and choose the pages that you want to add from the list on the left. At first, it is usually best to select “primary” for each page’s title entry to ensure that it receives full viewer attention. You can always change some to “secondary” later, if you like. For example:

How to create a wordpress website for beginners

  1. Set Your Site Homepage. There are two major options for this step. You can set your homepage as a dynamic or static page. As a dynamic page, it will update to include all of your latest posts. When set as a static page, it will maintain and display the same content. To complete this step, click “Settings” on your dashboard, and then click “Reading.” When the “Reading Settings” page appears, you will see the first setting, “Front Page Displays.” Choose “Your latest posts” or “A static page,” then take time to save your homepage settings.

If you decide to choose “Your latest posts,” you can also set how many recent blog posts will appear on this page at once. You can also indicate whether or not the complete text should be visible, or just a summary. When selecting “A static page,” be sure to set up a blog page to contain all of your latest posts. You have now triumphed over any possible difficulties concerning how to create WordPress website step by step.

  1. Change Your Site Comments Settings. Your WordPress website has a built-in comments feature. Comments are an excellent way to establish a strong connection with your site visitors. However, website developers advise filtering comments to avoid spam. To do this, access “Discussion” under settings in your dashboard. By choosing “Comment to be manually approved,” you can decide whether or not to publish comments. (Check out the image below) Then save your changes. Now you truly understand how to create a WordPress website for beginners.

Step 7. Install Plugins for Your Site

By installing plugins, you can add features that are not included on WordPress. Like apps, some plugins are free, and some are for sale. All plugins in the WordPress directory are free. However, you will need to purchase any that are third-party plugins.

Since more than 56,000 plugins are available for your use as a WordPress website owner, it is essential to be selective when adding plugins. Adding an excess of plugins will make your site load slower, interfering with your site performance and lowering your rankings on Google. For best results, choose plugins that have several hundred downloads and positive reviews. The most frequently used WordPress plugins include Contact Form by WP Forms, Yoast SEO and WooCommerce.

How Much Does it Cost to Use WordPress?

Improving SEO for your WordPress website is essential. Although you can download and use WordPress absolutely free, there are additional charges for more in-depth services you need to consider. There are six necessary costs before you are able to have a live site including charges for your domain name, premium plugins and themes and hosting fees. Unless you have hosted other WordPress sites, your best option is to start small until you are certain which features you will require. Here is an image showing the different pricing options:

How much does WordPress ACTUALLY cost

As your website starts to grow, you can determine which features are necessary. This will save you money upfront because you will not be purchasing anything you do not need. Adding more features will increase the cost of running your website. You can improve your hosting configuration, performance, speed and number of monthly visitors. Premium WordPress templates, themes, plugins and add ons will improve the quality of your site but require an additional cost.

WordPress How Much Does it Cost?

The cost to cover just the WordPress basics is approximately $4-$11 per month, as you’ll see in the photo above. To be realistic, you should expect to pay approximately $200 per month in addition to a monthly fee between $11 and $40 per month. If you intend to hire a web designer, be prepared to pay a minimum of $1,000 per month. The best way to begin calculating your costs is to create a budget for the six essential WordPress components. This includes:

  • Domain Name: The average cost for a domain name is $12 per year.
  • Hosting: The cost of hosting is $2.95 per month.
  • Pre-Made Themes: Depending on the themes you use, expect to pay between zero and $200 per month.
  • Security: Your cost varies depending on whether you pay a one-time fee for security or if your fee is ongoing. The average cost starts at $50 per month.
  • Plugins: Plugins are also reliant on one-time or recurrent charges. Your cost is between zero and $1,000.
  • Developer Fees: Expect to pay between zero and $1,000.

Domain Name

The majority of website builders provide you with a domain name when you purchase a paid plan. WordPress is different because you need to purchase a domain name from a domain registrar for an annual cost of about $12 per year. Your best option is choosing a name similar to the name of your website or business whenever possible. Your domain name should be memorable and short. You can purchase most domain names for approximately $12 per year.

If you select an extremely desirable domain name, it may not be available or cost thousands or even millions. The extension for the most desirable and popular domain names is .com. If the name you want is not available, there are other options including .net, .org and .edu. Online guides are available to help you select your domain name. A premium domain name is extremely desirable. These names are frequently purchased by investors to resell at a profit.

If you purchase a premium domain name, your cost can easily reach the thousands. Keep in mind when you renew your domain after the first year, you will only have to pay a standard rate of between $10 and $15 per year. If you believe the name offers strong benefits for your business, the cost can be worth the advantages. In order to set up your website, the cost of a domain name is an unavoidable essential.

WordPress Cost for Hosting Plans

Your hosting plan is critical when determining how much WordPress costs per month. When you purchase your hosting plan you receive a small amount of space on the internet for your website. You do not receive an actual website or hosting. If you decide to use a website builder such as WordPress, you pay a fee every month for the service including your domain name and hosting. You can choose a host for your WordPress Website.

WordPress recommends using Bluehost but you are not restricted as to which host you prefer. The cost you pay for hosting is relatively small. The cost for WordPress hosting is $2.95 to $5.45 per month. Managed WordPress is $19.95 to $49.95 per month and WooCommerce comes in at $6.95 to $12.95 per month. When you search for a host, many of the costs you will see are promotional. This is what the Bluehost sign-up sheet looks like:

How much does WordPress ACTUALLY cost

To be certain of the most current rates, check the official website of the host. Your best option is purchasing a powerful and fairly inexpensive host. Once your website starts to draw more traffic, you can accommodate spikes with more flexible hosting such as WP Pro. The current cost for this plan begins at $19.95 per month. If you intend to run an online sales business using WordPress, you will require the WooCommerce plugin.

Running an eCommerce site will increase your WordPress cost. In this instance, hosting plans are available through Bluehost specifically designed for the WooCommerce plugin. The current cost starts at $6.95 per month. If you already have a website and are unhappy with your host, you can have your WordPress website migrated to the Bluehost servers at no cost as long as you purchase a hosting plan from Bluehost first. If you have multiple websites, Bluehost has another option.

Your cost for transferring a maximum of 20 email accounts and five websites to a new server is $149.99. Before you choose a hosting plan, it is a good idea to conduct some research to compare server prices, features and quality. The majority of plans include a money-back guarantee for a full 30 days.

WordPress Themes

Before you can accurately determine how much WordPress is, you need to consider the cost of your theme. Your cost can be free or as much as $200 depending on where you get your themes. Take a look at the WordPress library before you make a decision. You will discover a large selection of free themes. You can demo the themes to make certain you have found the one you like before installing it on your website. You can install your chosen theme with the simple click of a button. Here are just a few examples of free themes available on WordPress:

How much does WordPress ACTUALLY cost

All of the themes are created by developers and have received approval from the Theme Review Team. Each theme includes a user rating to help ensure you do not choose a theme you will most likely regret later. If you do not find your ideal theme in the free WordPress theme library, you have another option. There is a wide range of third-party sites offering both free themes and premium themes for between $2 and $200. There are advantages to paying for your theme.

If you do decide to purchase a theme, the chances are good it will be slightly less generic with a much sleeker look. If you do make a purchase, you will only need to pay for it once. You can also use your theme for as many websites as you want. Despite the price range mentioned above, the average cost for a theme is approximately $55. There are some precautions you should take before purchasing a theme. Take a look at some of the themes available for purchase:

How much does WordPress ACTUALLY cost

Make certain the site is legitimate before entering your credit card number. Although the majority are reputable, you will find the occasional rogue. Try conducting a search using the words responsive and clean. Do not underestimate the power of user reviews. If most of the reviews are negative, look somewhere else. If a theme is unusually cheap or appears sketchy, there is a good chance it will not be updated. This can result in your WordPress site breaking so be careful.

When considering how much it costs to use WordPress, remember your theme is not included in your monthly or yearly costs. Do not be concerned if you are unable to find a theme you like with all of the features you want. You can add more features to your website through the use of plugins regardless of your theme. Since the majority of top plugins are not free, you will need to incorporate this cost as well.

WordPress Plugins

The question of WordPress how much it costs is partially dependent on the plugins you choose. Some have an ongoing cost while others only require an initial fee. If your theme requires additional functionality, you will need to use plugins. This is a similar concept to downloading an app to your laptop or smartphone. You can find a wide range of free plugins in addition to premium versions including a pared back version for free.

If all you need is a simple plugin for a personal blog or website, you can probably find something suitable for free or inexpensively. If your website requires more complicated plugins, you can easily reach the thousands depending on how many you purchase. Start by looking in the WordPress Plugin Directory. You will find thousands of plugins available including the majority of the most popular currently available. Some of the most frequently purchased plugins include:

MonsterInsights

If you need to improve your analytics, MonsterInsights is a good plugin. You can try the free version or purchase the premium for between $99.50 and $399.50 per year.

How much does WordPress ACTUALLY cost

Yoast SEO

If you need to improve your Search Engine Optimization or SEO, Yoast SEO is an excellent option for helping to improve the ranking of your site. You can use the free version or make a one time purchase of $69 for the premium.

How much does WordPress ACTUALLY cost

MailChimp

MailChimp enables your website to capture email addresses and send emails. This is especially useful for eCommerce sites. You can try the free version or pay between $59 and $149 per year for a premium plan.

The estimate is approximately 60 percent of all WordPress websites that are hacked have become compromised due to a plugin or theme. If you use a free or cheap plugin or theme for your site as opposed to something with great reviews and reliability, you are taking a serious risk. The best plugins are focused on security for your protection.

How much does WordPress ACTUALLY cost

Security

How much WordPress costs per month is affected by your level of security. You can purchase security for a one-time fee of between $50 and $550 or there can be a yearly fee with a minimum of $50. You can receive security for free because the WordPress software includes some very robust security. You will need to update your WordPress software, themes and plugins on a regular basis. When you see an update has become available, installing it as quickly as possible is critical.

If you fail to update your software you are placing your website at serious risk for viruses and hackers. You can simplify the process by selecting a hosting provider for your WordPress site that includes automatic backups and updates as a standard practice. One of the essentials for security is a Secure Socket Layer or SSL certificate. This technology has become a standard for ensuring your internet connection remains secure. SSL is the S in HTTPS.

SSL provides you with a padlock for the search bar. If your website does not have an SSL Padlock, your visitors can receive a warning an unsecured site is being entered and their details are at risk. This will ensure you lose visitors. An SSL certificate is included by website builders. If you are using a CMS system, you will need to acquire an SSL certificate. Your cost for a basic certificate is approximately $50 per year. If you require higher tech, you can pay more than $600. This is an example of what it will look like:

How much does WordPress ACTUALLY cost

A free SSL certificate is offered by the majority of hosting providers with the purchase of some WordPress hosting plans. SSL security not only ensures your website remains secure but it also provides you with peace of mind whenever you are online. Despite the levels of security WordPress has built into its software, there are numerous plugins providing your website with an additional layer of security. A good example is UpdraftPlus.

This plugin is for backups and restores. You can use the free plan or purchase a premium plan for a one-time fee starting at $70. Sucuri is a plugin providing hack fixes and advanced protection for a one-time fee between $199.99 and $499.99. The cost you need to pay for additional security is worth the money. If your website is virused, hacked or crashes, the money you spend correcting the issue can easily reach thousands. Protecting your website and visitors is of critical importance.

Developer Costs

How much WordPress also depends on whether or not you need to hire a developer. Your one-time fee can be $500, $1,000 or more. There are many good reasons why hiring a developer for your site is necessary including:

  • You do not have enough time to develop your website
  • Your are not confident or experienced with the process
  • The design you want is extremely specific
  • You need advanced functionality requiring custom coding

Determining the exact cost of a developer is almost impossible because the price is based on your specific needs. If all you want is a very basic site, you will most likely not need to spend more than $100 or $200. If you require a more complex website, you can expect to pay a minimum of $1,000. A complex website consists of additional features. A good example is a website for yoga classes. Your clients will need to log into individual accounts to pay their membership fees and schedule classes.

The more functions you need for your website the higher the developer fees. If you are fairly confident in your abilities, there is a wide range of free and paid resources available online to help you through the process. You can find tips created specifically for beginners and step-by-step guides. The community of WordPress websites is both exceptionally large and extremely friendly. If you have a specific question or issue, the chances are excellent you can find the solution online.

If you are more visual, YouTube has numerous free tutorial videos available. You can also take courses in website building online. If you decide to hire a developer, check their online reviews and compare pricing. All developers are not equal and you want to make certain you receive a high-quality website.

In today’s digital world, having an easy-to-access portfolio of work is a must-have for creative specialists, such as writers, designers, photographers, and more.

Fortunately, building a portfolio website doesn’t have to be a time-intensive, costly endeavor. Compared to traditional portfolios, there’s no need to spend on paper, print, ink, which can be quite expensive for you.

By using WordPress, you can put together a professional portfolio website without any special technical knowledge. Simply follow the steps outlined in our guide below to build a portfolio website using WordPress.

Why use WordPress for your portfolio website?

WordPress makes it easy to put together your portfolio at a low cost and without coding experience.

This is an amazing time-saving feature for artists who want their work shown off in the best light possible without having to spend hours on paper or dealing with tricky printing problems.

By choosing WordPress, you can build a beautiful and professional portfolio to:

  • Showcase your skills: A beautiful portfolio website means your work can stand out and highlight the best of your skills.
  • Capture potential clients and recruiters: With an appealing portfolio, clients are more likely to see the value of your work.
  • Earn work and book services directly on your site: Clients can check out your work and get in touch directly. You might even add a one-click payment link.
  • Boost your brand: Your online presence can elevate your professionalism and make clients aware of your brand.

Unlike other platforms, you can customize all areas of your portfolio website and stay in full control of the branding, analytics, and payments. It also follows best practices for web design today, including SEO, mobile responsiveness, and more.

Plus, WordPress offers a large library of themes and plugins that you can leverage.

This means you don’t have to design from scratch. Instead, you can simply use pro-designed templates and web builders to save you time as you make your portfolio.

Before you start building your portfolio on WordPress

Before you dive in and build your portfolio website, you should prepare some materials in advance. Kick off the process by getting your content ready, so you can simply drop it into WordPress.

1. Choose the work you’re most proud of

There’s no need to include every project you’ve ever worked on. Select the work you’re most proud of, especially those that relate to the type of work you’re hoping to get.

2. Write captivating, SEO-powered descriptions

For each portfolio entry, create a clear description that uses SEO for your industry. By adding keywords, you’ll attract clients searching for your type of work.

3. Enhance portfolio entries with high-quality visuals

To boost engagement, every entry should have a high-quality visual to accompany it. Choose an image or video that captures the showcased work.

Make sure you compress your visuals before uploading them onto WordPress. If they’re too big, it can slow down page navigation and make your visitors wait for the browser to load. To avoid this problem and make sure that the quality of the visuals stays high, try editing them with online photo or video editors like Canva and others.

4. Prepare other content areas, as needed

Your portfolio website may benefit from other types of content as well, such as an “about me”

section, contact form, and testimonials. Prep this content ahead of time so you can easily add it.

5. Hire your domain name and hosting

Before you build a portfolio website on WordPress, you’ll need to hire two key services in advance: the domain name and hosting.

Domain name

You’ll have to purchase a domain name, which will be your website’s URL. Choose a domain registrar to look up available names and buy your own. While GoDaddy is the most popular registrar, you might also opt for BlueHost, HostGator, Namecheap, or DreamHost.

Hosting

To get your website up and running, you’ll have to hire a web hosting service. Some popular providers include BlueHost, HostGator, Hostinger, Hostwinds, DreamHost, GreenGeeks, etc. Just be sure to avoid cheap providers, as they might not have the same level of security.

How to build a portfolio website using WordPress

Now that you have all the materials and services ready to build your portfolio website, let’s get started! Below, our tutorial will use BlueHost as a hosting provider, but you can choose your preferred provider instead.

Step 1: Purchase your domain name and hosting on BlueHost

How to Build a Portfolio Website Using WordPress
To get WordPress set up, you’ll have to purchase your domain name and hosting. Simply go to BlueHost and choose the Basic hosting plan.

When prompted, you can add the domain name you would like (which is included in the first year). After adding your domain name, simply click “Next.”

Finally, you’ll have to fill in all your account information. A variety of “package extras” are available here and you may want to consider the “Domain Privacy Protection,” which hides your name and address from public view. Once you’re ready, click “Submit.”

Step 2: Install WordPress via BlueHost

How to Build a Portfolio Website Using WordPress
Next, you have to install WordPress from your BlueHost account. Start by logging into your BlueHost account. Once in, the site will prompt you to select a theme. Feel free to pick one or skip it for now.

Once you’re ready to create your site, click on “Start Building” and you’ll be taken to the WordPress dashboard.

Step 3: Choose a portfolio-friendly WordPress theme, builder and/or plugin

How to Build a Portfolio Website Using WordPress
You can search online for WordPress themes for designers. These are usually the most creative ones. There’s also the alternative of getting one from the WordPress repository.

From the WordPress dashboard, you can now start putting together your portfolio website. Start by choosing your theme. Click on “Appearance” → “Themes.” Find your preferred theme from the grid or search for it in the bar. Once you’ve chosen your favorite, click “Install.”

Ideally, you should choose a WordPress theme that’s friendly for building portfolios. For example, some themes have specific “Portfolio” post types that can make it easy to showcase your work. Our theme recommendations for WordPress portfolios include:

  • Argent
  • Astra
  • Blask
  • Clean Portfolio
  • Espied
  • Illustratr
  • Orvis
  • Rebalance
  • Sidespied
  • Sketch

Should you use a WordPress page builder, too?

If you’re looking for even more professional designs and page features, you might opt for a WordPress page builder that comes with its own themes, modules, and portfolio opportunities.

Go beyond the basics by selecting one of the best page builders for easy designing and deciding on your theme from there. For example, you may achieve a highly professional look by choosing WordPress theme development with React.

What if your theme doesn’t come with a “Portfolio” post type?

If your favorite theme doesn’t have a “Portfolio” post type, you can also build a portfolio using a plugin. Simply click on “Plugins” → “Add New” to install new ones. Just like themes, you can use the search bar or check out featured plugins in the grid. Once you’ve found the plugin of your choice, click “Install Now.”

Here are some top plugins to build a portfolio website:

  • NextGen Gallery
  • Envira Photo Gallery
  • Portfolio Post Type
  • Portfolio Gallery
  • Visual Portfolio

Step 4: Activate your Portfolio settings

How to Build a Portfolio Website Using WordPress
To start set-up, click on “Portfolio” on the left sidebar. (If you chose a plugin, select it from the sidebar instead.) If you don’t see “Portfolio” in your list, you may need to activate it. To do so, simply navigate to “Settings” → “Writing” → “Content Types” and toggle on the “Portfolio Projects” option.
How to Build a Portfolio Website Using WordPress
Here you can also adjust how many Portfolio Projects to display per page. Simply fill in the blank with your preferred number.

Step 5: Add materials and adjust project settings

How to Build a Portfolio Website Using WordPress
It’s time to add your first portfolio entry. Navigate to “Portfolio” → “Add New.” From there you’ll be taken to the individual entry’s settings.
How to Build a Portfolio Website Using WordPress
Once here, you should drop in the content you’ve already prepared, including:

  • The featured image
  • The description
  • The excerpt meta

You should also take a close look at the settings on the right-hand sidebar. For example, if you want to allow comments on your portfolio entries, simply click on “Discussion” and check the option “Allow comments.” Here you can also select the project types and tags for SEO.

Step 6: Publish and manage your portfolio as needed

Once your portfolio entry is ready, click “Publish” in the upper right-hand corner. Take a look at the live version and make sure it appears as you wish.

Next, go ahead and fill out all your portfolio items so that the grid is complete. Remember that you may have to reorder the portfolio items for them to show in your preferred sequence.

Step 7: Add About Me, contact form, and testimonials (optional)

Once your portfolio is complete, you should also build out the rest of your website so that it’s easy for clients to learn more about you and get in touch. For example, you may want to add pages or sections for:

    • “About Me” – Click on “Pages” and add a new page dedicated to who you are, including your professional background and available services.
    • Contact form – Add a contact form for clients to get in touch. You might try installing any major contact form plugin or simply add your info to a new “Page.”

Share your new portfolio website with clients

In a few easy steps, you can build a portfolio using WordPress with no experience required. To keep your portfolio website updated over time, you can add more entries or manage them by going to the “Portfolio” settings. Ultimately, WordPress makes it easy to maintain and update your portfolio as your career grows.

Now that you have a beautiful portfolio to showcase your projects, share the link with potential clients and get more work!

How To Deal With a Hacked WordPress Site

When you run a WordPress website, hacking is a very real possibility. Hackers exploit weak points in the WordPress system to gain access to your site files — usually, their goal is to redirect your traffic or insert ads to boost their own earnings. Dealing with your own WordPress hack? Don’t panic; with these tips, you can regain control and boost your WordPress security protocol to prevent future attacks.

Signs That Your WordPress Site Has Been Hacked

Before you do anything else, take some time to make sure that your WordPress website is actually the victim of a hack. Sometimes, problems with the coding or your hosting company can cause unusual behaviors that look like hacking. Resolving a hack can be time consuming, so it pays to be certain before you take action.

Keep in mind that every hack is different. Some hackers take over the full site, replacing your pages with a malicious message or graphic; this happens when your WordPress index.php is hacked. Others are sneaky, inserting tiny bits of code to achieve their goals while making it seem like your site is running normally. As technology changes, so does the sophistication of the hackers. Installations of WordPress hacked 2021 might look different than those of WordPress hacked 2019.

Some red flags of installations of WordPress hacked 2021 are:

  • Users tell you that they’re being redirected to spam pages when they visit your site
  • The meta descriptions and titles in your Google search results don’t match the back-end WordPress post
  • Your login credentials have suddenly stopped working
  • Page speed slows dramatically without a logical explanation
  • Traffic drops suddenly and dramatically
  • Strange links, ads, or pop-ups appear without your authorization
  • New user accounts appear in your WordPress interface
  • WordPress email stops working correctly
  • You notice new and unauthorized files on your website’s server

As you can see, some of the methods used to hack WordPress sites are subtle and hard to detect. In fact, some signs are so subtle that installations of WordPress hacked 2019 or earlier can go undetected for years. If you think your site might be the victim, it’s a good idea to check all of these factors before continuing; this gives you a baseline to use for comparison as you find a solution.

What to Do to Fix a Hacked WordPress Site

If you discover that your WordPress site has been hacked, check to see if you still have login access. If you do, follow these steps to deal with the hack.

  • Switch into Maintenance Mode

Hacked sites can look unusual and behave in strange ways. Is your WordPress index.php hacked? You’ll probably notice a difference in the home page. This can damage user trust, particularly if you’re dealing with a WordPress hacked redirect situation. If you still have access to your login function, get into your WordPress dashboard and download a maintenance-mode plugin. Any highly rated, recently updated version will do. Turn on maintenance mode — then, when people land on your page, they’ll see a “we’re undergoing maintenance; check back soon” message instead of a compromised site. Then, change your passwords. Here is where you go to set up your maintenance mode:

  • Backup Your Site Files

If you don’t have a recent backup of your WordPress site, create one now. Save it on your local drive and put a copy on a cloud server like Google Drive or DropBox as a safeguard. Since WordPress security plugins have been known to break websites, it doesn’t hurt to have a backup on hand just in case. Make sure to backup the databases and the files.

  • Scan for Malware

When a WordPress website is hacked, the perpetrators usually put a piece of code somewhere in your site files. Before you can do anything else, you need to remove those files; that’s where a scanner comes in. You can use WordPress security plugins such as GOTMLS or any other highly rated option. It’s also a good idea to run your URL through external virus scanners including VIRUSTOTAL, Sitecheck, or Is It Hacked?. Each one scans your site and lets you know if it finds an instance of known malware. For example, take a look at this scan done by VIRUSTOTAL:

Is your WordPress database hacked? Once you’ve identified malware, locate the files on your server and remove them. Keep in mind that this process can break your site if you’re not familiar with what each file does. If you want to proceed, check this detailed guide for step-by-step instructions.

If you’re uncomfortable doing that, an easy option is to buy a subscription to a paid WordPress malware removable plugin. One option is MalCare. Your hosting provider may also have a malware-removal service that can help you, though it’s likely to be more expensive. The image below is what your MalCare Dash will look like. Notice how you can set when and how frequently you can scan.

While you’re scanning your WordPress site, it’s a good idea to run a scan of your computer using your usual antivirus program. Do the same for any device you use to login to your WordPress dashboard. This process helps get rid of malware that’s used to steal your passwords.

  • Change Your Passwords Again

Once your website and computer are free of malware, change the password you use to log into the site. Even though you did this at the beginning of the process, it was before you cleaned out the malware; a second change prevents hackers from getting back into your clean site. If you have other authorized users, ask them to do the same. Have a variety of users? You can use a plugin to force every person to reset their passwords; this can prevent a compromised account from gaining access.

Make sure that your new passwords are impossible for a hacking program to guess. Great passwords are long, complex, and made with a broad variety of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Never reuse passwords between programs.

After your passwords have been changed, check out the “Users” tab in your WordPress dashboard. If you don’t recognize any of the accounts, or if you find any that you don’t use, delete them. This is what the Users Dashboard should look like:

What to Do if You Can’t Login to Your Hacked Website in WordPress

Sometimes, hackers take over the account that you use to manage your WordPress website. If this happens, you will get an error message when you try to log in. To start, try resetting your password — just click on the “Lost your password?” link under the login form. Enter your email address, and WordPress will send you an email. If you succeed in this process, follow the steps above to deal with the hack.

Still can’t get in? Is your WordPress database hacked and locked? No problem. Most hosting providers offer a backdoor way to get into your site. To start:

  1. You’ll need to login to your cPanel account and search for a program called “phpMyAdmin”.
  2. In the phpMyAdmin interface, click on the “wp_users” folder.
  3. Locate your current administrator login from the list and look for the column marked “user_email”.
  4. Change that email address to another email that you have control of.
  5. Save your changes.

Here are the steps to take after you get to “phpMyAdmin:

Return to the login screen for your website, and enter the new email address. At that point, you should be able to use “Lost your password?” to send the password reset message to the new address. Follow the instructions to change your password, log into your site with the new combination, and follow the steps above to clear up the hack.

Restoring Your WordPress Site from a Backup After a Hack

Fixing a hacked website in WordPress is not an easy task. If you don’t have time, or if you simply don’t want to spend money on malware-removal tools, another option is to restore a backup. Keep in mind that this is only an option if you have a copy of the site that you know to be free of malware.

If you have a backup service through your hosting provider, the process is simple. Just login to your account and follow the instructions to restore to the clean backup copy. For local backups, you’ll need to replace all of the files on your server with the backed-up versions.

When you restore from a backup, you will lose any changes that you’ve made to the site since the backup date. For smaller sites and sites that are updated infrequently, this probably isn’t a big deal. If you just published a number of articles, or if you made changes to your CSS or theme, restoring from an older copy is problematic. At that point, it may be better to remove the malware or hire someone to fix the hack on your behalf.

Planning to go ahead with a backup copy of the site? Remember that it’s not a safe copy — after all, it was vulnerable enough to be hacked in the first place. You’ll still need to change passwords, make updates, and clear out any unused files to close the weakness that the hack exploited.

How to Improve Your WordPress Security and Prevent Future Hacks

Once you’ve been through a hack, you know what a hassle it is to fix — that’s why it’s well worth the effort to put a few safeguards in place. These simple steps can help you prevent other hackers from gaining access to your site.

Register with Google Search Console

If you haven’t done it yet, it’s time to set up your site in Google Search Console. When you do, you’ll gain access to a range of information, from your average Google ranking to the most popular keywords on your site. More importantly, you’ll add an extra layer of protection to your site.

Google scans websites frequently — when it finds malware or other suspicious code, it takes action to protect its users. Users might get a warning when they click on a link to your site, or Google might restrict traffic entirely. If the website in question is registered with Search Console, the system also sends a message to you. This warning helps you take action quickly; without it, you might not find out about the hack for weeks or months. Take a quick look at what your dashboard will look like:

Update WordPress Regularly

One of the easiest ways to protect your site is to keep it updated. Updates often contain security patches — in other words, they block the holes and weaknesses that hackers use to breach your site. When everything is up to date, it’s harder for hackers to get in. Make sure to run regular update checks of your site theme, plugins, and WordPress itself. If you notice that a plugin or theme is no longer supported, it might be a good idea to switch to a different option.

While you’re at it, make sure that you clear out anything that’s not in use. Hackers can exploit outdated plugins, old themes, and other forgotten files to compromise your site.

Start Saving Backups

Websites take a great deal of time and effort to build, write, and optimize. While a backup won’t prevent a hack, it can be a lifesaver in case a hacker manages to decimate all of your files. Simply restore the latest backup copy, and you can avoid losing most of your work.

The easiest way to handle backups is to add them to your hosting plan. Most companies offer regular daily backups as an add-on service; they handle the process and the storage, so you don’t have to worry about it. If you want to save money, you can backup your WordPress site manually. There are also plenty of backup plugins that will handle the task. WordPress recommends that if you go this route, you also do a manual backup on occasion in case the plugin stops working.

Change Passwords Every 90 Days

If you’ve ever worked for a company with stringent data-security protocols, you know that most require frequent password updates. To prevent future hacks, it’s a good idea to use the same strategy. By changing your password every 90 days, you make it harder for a hacking program to guess it and breach your files. Make sure that other users do the same, and always use complex, long, and hard-to-guess passwords.

Get to Know Your Files

As the owner of the website, you’re in the best position to spot a hack quickly. To start, get familiar with the files on your WordPress website. Then, learn how to check out the User Log and the list of registered users. The better you know your site, the easier it is to see when something is amiss. One option is Website File Changes Monitor

If you run multiple websites, this type of hands-on approach can be challenging. In that case, you might use a plugin that lets you know every time one of your files is changed. One option is Website File Changes Monitor, which sends you an email when it finds malware, changes to your code, or unused files. For instance:

How Does a Hack Affect Your WordPress SEO?

Hacking comes with so many unpleasant side effects that it’s easy to overlook SEO. A hacked site is often flagged by Google, particularly when it’s sending users to spammy websites, displaying malicious ads, or using a WordPress hacked redirect to divert your visitors. When this happens, the resulting Google warnings can cut off traffic and nullify your SEO efforts.

Is your WordPress index.php hacked? This has an obvious affect on SEO; it essentially erases all of the content you’ve worked so hard to create. Plus, once a visitor sees a hacked homepage, it takes a great deal of work to get them back to your site.

Some hacks are more sophisticated; they might insert code that changes the way your page titles and meta descriptions look in the search results. Since these two factors have a big impact on the SEO of your page, hacked versions can lead to a drop in the search rankings. As a result, fewer visitors come to your pages, causing rankings to drop even farther.

Hackers often use vulnerable websites to insert links that trick visitors into revealing private information or downloading malware. If your site has high traffic levels and high authority, a hacker might replace your existing links with links that direct visitors to ad-heavy spam sites. The goal is to increase traffic and ad revenue. When this happens, users are unlikely to come back to your website, which leads to a drop in trust. It can also affect the bounce rate and the amount of time that people spend on your site. These behaviors tell Google that users aren’t happy with your site; in many cases, it responds by pushing your site down in the rankings.

Diib®: Assisting in Maintaining Your Site Security!

No matter what type of hack you’re facing, it’s almost certain to have a negative impact on your SEO. If you rely on ads and affiliate sales for an income, hacking can cause a sudden decrease in revenue.

Whether you’re building a brand-new site or you run a large, profitable website, hacking puts your work at risk. By dealing with a hack quickly and establishing a set of security practices, you can solve the problem and reduce the risk of future insecurity. SEO, or search engine optimization, is one of the biggest components involved in building, sharing, and scaling a website or an online presence for any business, brand, or idea. When a website is properly optimized for search engines, it is much easier to spread the word of a site’s overall purpose and message while driving traffic and clicks to your official website or even an eCommerce storefront, resulting in increased revenue generation opportunities.

When you opt to utilize WordPress, one of the most robust, free content management systems, or CMS solutions for websites today, implementing SEO is a breeze and can be done on your own even if you are not familiar with programming or web design yourself. Understanding the basics of SEO and how to work with search engine optimization inside of your latest WordPress installation can help you to get your website up and running properly while promoting only keywords and phrases that are most relevant to your website’s purpose and the prospective audience you intend to reach.

How to Enable SEO on WordPress

Once the installation of your latest copy of WordPress has been installed to your website or the directory of your choice, you can immediately log in to the WordPress administrative area, which is often accessible by adding “/admin” after your domain’s URL if you installed WordPress using the default settings in place. Once you have accessed your WordPress admin area, you will see a variety of links in the left hand sidebar.

General SEO and WordPress Settings

Towards the bottom of the left hand sidebar within the WordPress admin area, you can access General settings as well as other settings as they pertain to your WordPress installation and the WordPress account you currently have associated with your website. Clicking on General>Settings can help you to create a site title while also implementing various SEO techniques to assist with boosting your website’s overall ranking and visibility within top search engines. Choose Settings>Accessibility or Reading to ensure your website is visible to search engines and that search engines currently have permission to crawl and index your website once it is live and online.

Permalinks

Setting up your website’s permalink preferences is also possible from the general setting area of the WordPress admin area. Choosing permalink preferences can significantly impact how well your website is received in terms of SEO with various search engines today. Choose to utilize the title of your posts and pages as your permalink preference as opposed to only publishing dates or random characters, as this will help users to better find the content and updates you create via search engines. The more relevant your permalinks appear, the easier it is for various search engines to crawl, identify, categorize, and promote a link to a website.

From the left hand side bar General>Settings>Permalinks, this is the page you should see:

Create a Consistent Content Strategy

Having a consistent, high-quality, and evergreen content strategy is essential for any WordPress website, especially if you intend to boost your site’s search engine optimization with the use of SEO page WordPress plugins as well as high-quality pieces of content for your users, followers, and even loyal customers or clients.

Whenever you create a WordPress blog post SEO should be considered, especially when choosing the name for your SEO page WordPress or the piece of content you intend to publish and share. Spend time researching various phrases and keywords that are most relevant to your current market and the audience you intend to reach.

Utilize tools such as Google Trends to learn more about what other users are searching for while browsing search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, Bing, and even DuckDuckGo. When you know what your prospective audience is looking for, it is much easier to develop unique, informative, in-depth, and useful content that will ultimately garner more views, clicks, and shares with the use of social media.

Create a content calendar using a digital service or even on your own to keep track of the type of content you are creating regularly, the number of shares or engagements you receive, as well as the overall sentiment and responses you receive for your published content and updates. Use a content calendar to avoid going too long without sharing updates, news, or even new products or pages with your followers directly on your website and even with the use of social media. A content calendar can prevent your brand or online presence from becoming stale and stagnant. This is an example of a good content calendar.

Create Categories and Utilize Tags Properly

WordPress allows you to create categories and tags to better organize posts, pages, blogs, and even special areas of your website for visitors and prospective customers or clients. Once you are logged in to the backend administrative area of your WordPress website, you can begin creating Categories and Tags from the left hand sidebar.

Categorize Wisely

It is important to categorize your content and the type of categories you wish to share with your users wisely. Avoid creating too many categories or categories that are overly specific, especially if you intend to publish or sell hundreds of pieces of content or products. Consider popular categories within the market or niche you intend to reach and spend time getting to know more about your current competitors and successful websites in your market to get a better understanding of categories that are likely to work best for you and your visitors. This is an example of what that organization may look like:

Tags

With each new post or page you create using WordPress, you have the option to add various tags to help users find your content quicker while also boosting the overall SEO of your website. Tags can also be used as a secondary organization system, which is optimal for larger websites or eCommerce storefronts hosting hundreds, if not thousands of products. You can also utilize tags to keep track of search terms that are most popular, frequented, or used to result in a sale or promotion of links via social media, email, and other online outlets.

Ensure Your WordPress is Mobile-Friendly

Creating a website that is not responsive or mobile-friendly today is typically a recipe for disaster, regardless of your chosen market or niche. With the rise in mobile browsing and smartphone ownership throughout the US and the world, it is no wonder why so many prioritize creating a website that is mobile-friendly as well as responsive for tablets, smartphones, and other alternative devices to traditional desktop computers and laptops.

Fortunately, WordPress is well-equipped to help with the integration of mobile-friendly and responsive layouts. Most free layouts provided by WordPress itself are entirely responsive and mobile-friendly, helping with the integration of a new website on mobile and traditional computing devices. It is also possible to seek out additional responsive and mobile-friendly layouts available from WordPress for a premium fee in addition to seeking out thousands of premium layouts from professional designers and WordPress agencies.

Always ensure the layout and design that you choose to use for your WordPress website is mobile-friendly and responsive. Test your website on a variety of devices as well as with various web browsers such as Google Chrome, Opera, Mozilla Firefox, and Internet Explorer before launching your website live. If you launch your website live and it does not load properly for users or if it is simply not responsive or mobile-friendly, you may increase your website’s bounce rate* and lose potential opportunities to garner new sales, followers, and even loyal customers.

Definition box: What is bounce rate? A website’s bounce rate indicates the percentage of visitors who have left your website after only visiting one page or viewing the landing page they were directed to via an advertisement, social media, or search engine listing.

Yoast Benefits

Updating and improving the SEO of your website does not have to feel tedious or neverending, especially with solutions such as Yoast. Yoast’s bulk editor can help you to add tags, categories, and other updates to all of your posts and pages with ease and without requiring manual editing and entering on your end. Network With the Use of Social Media

One of the most important aspects of running a successful online website, blog, or community, involves networking. Long gone are the traditional days of traveling across the country to network via conferences and events, although those do still exist. Today, using social media has proven extremely beneficial and highly effective when it comes to networking, seeking out sponsorships, and even building a following of your own.

Build Your Online Presence

Even if you do not intend to use social media constantly while promoting and building your WordPress website, using social media can help with boosting your website’s SEO while also allowing you to maximize your exposure and your ability to reach and amass an audience of your own.

Create an online presence with the use of social media and streamline your accounts with usernames that match your website’s official name. Upload and use only high-quality imagery including graphics of your logo as well as other branded material that can help users to better identify or relate to the type of content, services, or products you provide.

Use multiple social media networks such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Tiktok, and Pinterest to reach your users based on the demographics you intend to reach as well as the type of social media your prospective users are likely to utilize and engage in daily and regularly. The more in-tune you are with the wants and needs of your users, the easier it will become to deliver high-quality content and social media updates that help to drive even more traffic to your website, storefront, and WordPress setup altogether.

Implement your content strategy to ensure you post regularly and consistently to avoid algorithms interrupting the amount of exposure you receive in the feeds of your followers.

You can also utilize social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram to launch your very own ad campaigns to help with the promotion of your WordPress website along with SEO optimization. The more visibility your website receives organically or even via ad campaigns and marketing strategies you have launched via social media and other online outlets, the easier it is to improve your overall clickthrough rate, or CTR, generate traffic, and even generate revenue.

Understanding the significance of SEO is essential whether your WordPress website is a personal blog, an eCommerce storefront, or a combination of various elements based on the overall purpose or mission you have in mind. Once you familiarize yourself with the basics of SEO and how to navigate WordPress properly, you can begin implementing SEO techniques throughout each of the individual pages, posts, and pieces of content you publish to your site with ease. What is the Cloudflare WordPress Plugin?

In addition to being a powerful plugin, Cloudflare is a popular WordPress firewall and CND service. Cloudflare provides users with a free CDN to increase your website speed. You also receive a powerful suite of security features for your small business site. The free WordPress plugin improves your SEO, increases your page load speed and provides protection for vulnerabilities specific to WordPress and DDoS attacks. The plugin provides the same benefits you receive with Cloudflare. For more information look to the image below:

Only one click is required to install Cloudflare, with your settings developed specifically for your WordPress platform. A content delivery or CDN system encompasses distributed servers enabling files to be delivered by your website to users faster according to their geographic location. The majority of web hosting servers host the visitors from your website via a single location. The same server is accessed by all of your users regardless of their locations.

The result is often a delay of user content delivery for visitors located farther away from the central hosting server for your website. This issue is resolved by CDN because multiple edge servers are set up in different locations throughout the world. Static content is cached by these CDN servers for the central server for your website. Once requested, you have access to these servers. When you place a request, the closest CDN server to your location handles everything.

A good example is an individual located in the United States interested in accessing a website hosted in the United Kingdom. This request will be served by a CDN server in the United States as opposed to a server in the United Kingdom. This is because every user request is handled by the nearest CDN server to mitigate the distance between the server for the website and the location of the visitors. This means your website will load quicker for your visitors despite their geographic locations.

When your website loads quicker, your SEO rankings will increase slightly and the experience of your customers will improve. A CDN also decreases your primary server load to provide crash protection during spikes in traffic. The most popular CDN provider on the web is currently CDN. The large network of servers is distributed globally to automatically deliver fast content and cache static content. Cloudflare is also a distributed proxy server and website firewall based in the cloud.

All incoming website traffic is monitored with suspicious traffic blocked before reaching your server. A free basic plan appropriate for small business blogs and websites is available through Cloudflare. Best Cloudflare Settings for WordPress

You should not have any difficulties with the Cloudflare WordPress setup. You can choose one of two different methods. The first is using the one-click setup option located in the control panel of your host. The second is to sign up for Cloudflare manually by visiting the official website. The first option is the simplest way to enable the Cloudflare CDN on your blog or website.

Cloudflare has partnered with some of the most popular hosting services for WordPress to provide an option for an easy setup using their control panel. If there is not a built-in option to set up Cloudflare through your web host, you can manually add the service by visiting the official Cloudflare website. The specific details required to set up Cloudflare for both methods is provided below.

Method One

You can set up your Cloudflare CDN through the Setup Option available in your cPanel. You might also find a simple option for certain WordPress hosts such as SiteGround. This will enable the configuration of the Cloudflare CDN through your WordPress. Look in your hosting cPanel for a built-in integration app for Cloudflare. If available, you will be able to enable your service quickly with a few clicks of your mouse. The majority of hosting providers offer a similar option to set up Cloudflare.

Since there are slight variations, the steps provided below are to enable Cloudflare for a WordPress website hosted by SiteGround. If SiteGround is your hosting provider for WordPress, you only need a few minutes to set up Cloudflare on your website. Log in to your cPanel to begin, then navigate to the section for Site Improvement Tools. You will see a Cloudflare icon you need to click on. You might be aware Siteground began the switch to a new control panel recently.

If you have the new SiteGround panel look under your Speed tab to find the listing for Cloudflare. You need to click on the button marked Set Up to continue with your free CDN installation of Cloudflare. You will now see a popup requesting you to connect to your existing Cloudflare account or to create a new one. The next message shows your CDN activation is currently in progress. Wait for your installation to complete. Your Cloudflare CDN is now active on your website.

Method Two

For the second method, your Cloudflare CDN needs to be set up manually in WordPress. This is the method you need to use if there is not a configuration option available through your web hosting provider. Start by going to the official website for Cloudflare then clicking on Sign Up. You will create your Cloudflare account on the next page by entering a password and your email address. Type in the required information, then click on the button marked Create Account.

The next step is entering the URL for your WordPress website. You need to select your plan on the next screen. You can choose a free plan or select one of the paid plans. Cloudflare will then populate a listing of the DNS records located by their systems. Your subdomains will be included in your list. The DNS records with an orange cloud icon need to pass through Cloudflare. A gray cloud icon indicates the DNS records are bypassed by Cloudflare. For instance:

cloudflare-wordpress

Review your list carefully to ensure Cloudflare lists your primary domain as active with the orange cloud icon. Your next step is verifying your DNS records. Once this step is complete, go to the bottom of your screen and click on Continue. The next step will complete your Cloudflare installation. You will be asked to update your nameservers. You can then change your servers and point them to the nameservers for Cloudflare.

Cloudflare Nameservers Page

You need to allow some time for the propagation of your name server changes throughout the internet. During this period, some of your users might be unable to access your website. Your name servers can be changed through the account for your domain registrar such as Domain.com. If you are using a free domain you received from a web hosting provider, you need to log into your host account to change your name server. Since this is common with Bluehost, the steps below are for this host.

The process is similar no matter which hosting provider you are using. If you have any doubts, ask for detailed instructions from your hosting provider for your control panel. Start by logging into the cPanel dashboard for Bluehost. Navigate to the Domain section, then choose your domain name. Find the tab marked Name Servers and select the Edit option. Choose the Custom option and type in the nameservers you received from Cloudflare.

cloudflare-wordpress

The next step is adding your Cloudflare Nameservers directly to your web hosting cPanel. Once this is complete, go back to the setup page for Cloudflare. Click on Done, then finish your setup by checking your Nameservers button. You need to allow a few minutes for Cloudflare and your domain nameservers to be activated. Once your activation is complete, a success message will appear on your Cloudflare dashboard. You are now able to use your dashboard for customizing your Cloudflare settings.

Keep in mind, if you are not using Bluehost, there can be slight differences in your setup. There are also slight differences in the nameserver settings for different hosting providers.

Configuring Your Most Important Cloudflare Plugin Settings

By this time, you have already completed the basic setup for Cloudflare. To make certain your WordPress website remains secure, there are some essential settings that need to be configured.

Configuring Specific Page Rules for WordPress

Cloudflare can be customized to work on different pages on your website by setting up your page rules. This is extremely important to secure critical pages including the WP-admin area and your login page. You can set up these rules even if you selected the free account from Cloudflare. If you need to include additional page rules, you can include five more for a fee of $5 per month. At the top of your screen, you will see an option marked Page Rules. Click on this button.

Now click on the button marked Create Page Rule. You are now able to set up the three page rules defined below. This is what it should look like:

Securing your Login Page for WordPress

You can create a page rule to secure your login page as a high-security level on Cloudflare.

Enable High Security and Exclude a Cloudflare WordPress Dashboard

Your security level settings need to be on high, your cache level set to bypass and your apps and performance disabled. This will create a page rule for Cloudflare to secure your WordPress dashboard.

Force HTTPS

The third page rule enables the use of HTTPS in your WordPress. Your Setting needs to be set to Always use HTTPS.

Cloudflare SSL Settings

One of the most important settings is for your SSL certificate. Look at the top of your screen to locate the SSL/TSL menu. If you are currently using SSL, you need to select Full. If you do not have an SSL certificate, there is a guide included with instructions to receive a free SSL certificate for your WordPress website. Once you have completed this step, you will receive a green padlock from Cloudflare. This shows your website is secure.

Optimizing Cloudflare Using a Plugin

You can obtain a dedicated WordPress plugin from Cloudflare to optimize your settings for all of the following actions.

  • Setup Cloudflare quickly for your WordPress website
  • Automatically purging your cache
  • Rulesets
  • Add WAF or a web application firewall

To begin, your Cloudflare plugin must be installed and activated for your website. Once the process is complete, go to your admin panel and navigate to Settings then Cloudflare. You can now configure your settings for Cloudflare. There is a button market Create Your Free Account on the Settings page. If you have an existing account there is an option for Sign-In. Click on the correct option for your needs. You need to enter your API key and Cloudflare email on the next screen.

Your API key is located on the Cloudflare website in your account section. Open your My Profile page, find API tokens and click. Now return to the section marked Global API Key and click on View. A popup will appear showing your API key. This key needs to be copied. To use your key, return to your WordPress dashboard and enter your API key and email address. You can now save your API credentials for Cloudflare in WordPress. You should now see your home page on your dashboard. You can apply your WordPress optimizations with a single click including enable automatic cache and purge cache.

Optimizing Cloudflare for WordPress

Click on the Settings option to find additional Cloudflare options. You will also see your stats from the Analytics option including threats blocked, bandwidth saved and visitors. For example, here are analytics showing cached and uncached requests:

Like any business, you undoubtedly want to improve your search engine results page ranking.

Aside from creating content, creating social signals, and building backlinks, a great way to improve your site ranking is to speed it up.

A well-integrated content delivery network (CDN) does wonders for your WordPress SEO tools. It can speed up your page in several ways that we’ll dive into in a moment. We also have several choices if you are looking for the best CDN for WordPress.

What is a WordPress CDN?

First of all, don’t confuse a CDN with a replacement for your WordPress host. Instead, it’s another way to make your site load even faster, especially when coupled with plugins like the Yoast SEO WordPress plugin.

Content delivery networks are a network of servers around the world. They host copies of your WordPress content, including video streams, images, CSS, and JavaScript. Having these copies makes it easier for all your visitors to load that content. This is what your enable CDN WordPress page would look like:

How CDNs work

Imagine that you’re in San Diego hosting a website on a server. As you go down your WordPress SEO checklist, you might wonder why you need a CDN if you already have a host.

Customers from California won’t have to wait to open your page, but what about a potential customer from India? Latency causes them to have a different experience.

The longer the distance between a customer and the host, the longer the latency becomes. This is the time needed for the two systems to communicate. Take the illustration below. The right graphic shows you exactly how the information is disseminated, through the CDN, improving speed.

Under better circumstances, latency improves. With a CDN, you can move a copy of your site closer to your long-distance visitors. All this adds up to a fast-loading site for everyone.

Sometimes geography isn’t even the core cause of lousy latency. If you have thousands of customers from the same city visiting your site, a CDN can relieve the server’s burden.

Do you actually need a CDN?

The features sound great, but you should take a moment to think about whether you need a content delivery network. After all, this will cost additional money unless your web host includes it in your monthly costs.

The main reasons to consider adding a CDN to your site include:

  • If you regularly reach more traffic than you can handle on your server
  • If you want to reach a global audience or have already started to gather one
  • If you provide streaming audio or video services
  • If you otherwise have a media-rich website that slows down loading times

Benefits of Choosing the Best WordPress CDN

Taking the time to pick the best CDN for WordPress has all kinds of benefits.

Performance Boost

The number one reason to use a CDN is the massive performance increase it provides, and the speed tests prove it.

Anyone who has even a rudimentary understanding of SEO knows that faster-loading sites have higher conversion rates and fewer bouncing visitors. Remember the last time you clicked back to Google because you didn’t want to wait for the page anymore? It’s not you being impatient:

The following graphic will give you a visual idea of the difference in latency with and without a CDN.

GZIP Compression

All of the fastest CDN for WordPress plugins use GZIP, a file compression and decompression application. It further reduces your HTML, JavaScript, and CSS files to improve page loading time. It doesn’t work on images, though. Any major CDN you pick will use this compression technology by default.

Use a tool like Check GZIP Compression to see the numbers on why compression matters. Saving up to 70 percent on each file adds up to a huge amount of savings over time.

SEO Benefits

We mentioned before that installing a WordPress CDN can work wonders for your business’ SEO.

Page speed is a ranking element

In 2010, Google announced that speed matters for SERPs ranking.

Nobody knows exactly how much speed matters, but it’s safe to bet that it’s one of the heaviest-weighted factors. Especially since more and more users rely on their mobile devices to browse the Internet and make purchases.

Beware of render-blocking scripts

CDNs, while handy tools for any business, are no magic wand.

They deliver your content the same way you present them. If you have resources that block rendering, delays may still happen.

Render-blocking resources means anything that stops a website from rendering before a browser downloads it. CDNs can’t fix this for you, but you can make some changes on your end:

  • Inline your JavaScript if the site doesn’t use much
  • Use async scripts
  • Defer your scripts

This is the page in WordPress that helps to eliminate render blocking scripts. These are the steps:

  • SettingsAsync JavaScript
  • Check the box to Enable Async JavaScript at the top.
  • Choose between Apply Async and Apply Defer in the Quick Settings box.

Choosing the Best WordPress CDN

By now, you have an understanding of what a CDN is and how it works. Let’s talk about the elements that make up an active network.

1. Large network and good distribution

If the provider you choose doesn’t have a large network, they won’t have a wide enough spread to accommodate users from all over the globe. For example, Akamai has over 288,000 servers in 136 countries.

The more servers that have a copy of your site, the more reliably you can deliver fast content. With more servers, the more you can spread the resources.

Don’t forget to consider where a CDN provider’s servers cover. Most have thousands of servers in the United States and Europe, but few have coverage in the Middle East, Africa, South America, and other regions.

2. Quality customer support

The fastest CDN for WordPress won’t matter if you can’t fix any problems that come up. For that, you need a robust, knowledgeable customer service team.

This is especially true if you’ve never used a CDN before. It’s easier to install one than ever before, but there’s still a technical learning curve. The last thing you want is to make an error that reveals itself during an important event.

To evaluate a provider’s customer support, be on the lookout for these features:

  • Available 24/7
  • In-house, not in a call center
  • Phone access when email and chat are too slow
  • Staffed by real experts

FACT: Research indicates that in the U.S. alone, $62 billion is lost each year due to poor customer service. (Salesforce.com)

3. Transparent pricing

Finally, a good CDN shouldn’t be too expensive, and it should come with no surprises.

Most providers operate their network under one of two pricing models. One option is through a custom contract.

The largest CDNs typically utilize custom pricing, which varies considerably depending on the agreed-upon features. So there’s no easy way to guess how much this will cost you.

The other standard pricing model also varies based on usage. In this case, the price is per-gigabyte and lets you scale without signing a contract.

Which CDN is Best?

Having decided one of your best WordPress SEO tools is a CDN, it’s time to consider your options.

First and foremost, you should think about what you want out of your network. There are dozens of options, but of course, they’re not all created equal.

For example, some networks focus heavily on security. Others are limited in their regional spread but work well for businesses that have no international market.

Most CDN providers like Jetpack CDN offer free trials, so you can try a few out to see how they work and decide which one best serves your needs.

Here are a few to point you the right direction:

Cloudflare

There’s a reason many big-name companies rely on Cloudflare CDN for their websites:

  • Over 115 data centers around the world
  • SSL certificates
  • Up to 10 terabytes per second
  • DDoS protection
  • Easy WordPress integration

(Click here for this download page)

Incapsula

Businesses whose customers are exclusively in North America and Europe can benefit from Incapsula’s reduced cost.

  • 40 regional data centers
  • HTTP/2 and IPv6 support
  • Up to 5 terabytes per second
  • Load balancing
  • DDoS protection and firewalls

(Click here for this download page)

KeyCDN

KeyCDN is another network that many experts recommend. Not only is it a reliable provider, but it’s user-friendly and accessible for first-timers.

  • Dozens of data centers with more on the way
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Low latency SSD
  • Intuitive dashboard
  • Bot blocking, two-factor authentication, encryption
  • Easy WordPress integration

Additional powerful networks

  • MaxCDN, now StackPath CDN
  • Sucuri CDN
  • Jetpack CDN
  • Optimole CDN

Installing a CDN

Integrating a CDN with your WordPress site used to be more challenging. You used to have to configure the network in multiple places.

Thankfully, it’s a lot easier these days. Most providers design their CDNs with intuitive setup and also provide instructions. Some even package them as plugins for one-click installation.

Let’s walk through a few of the popular CDNs as an example.

Setting up Cloudflare CDN

First, you’ll need to make a free account on the Cloudflare website. After, you’ll be prompted to add a site.

Type in your company URL and click the button to move on. If you want to upgrade to a Premium account, you’ll have the chance at this point.

On the next screen, you’ll receive new nameservers to add to your host settings. Replace your existing ones with these new nameservers.

It can take about 24 hours for your DNS record to update, and then you’ll see it on the Cloudflare website.

Setting up StackPath CDN

Formerly known as MaxCDN, StackPath is another industry giant. They offer plans that include website firewall security. You can also access a one-month free trial.

To start, head to the StackPath website and create an account. You can either use the traditional email/password setup or log in with an existing Facebook, Github, or Google account. This page will look something like this:

Either way, head to Website & Application Services and choose your CDN plan.

On the next screen, the site will ask for your WordPress IP address. Your cPanel contains this information if you don’t already know it.

Finally, update your DNS records to use the StackPath information provided. StackPath does not merely use nameservers and requires its users to create an A record to point to the network.

Again, it will take about 24 hours for your WordPress site to adapt, so don’t forget to check on it later.

Setting up Sucuri CDN

Sucuri offers additional security benefits that protect your WordPress site from DDoS and similar attacks.

To get started, create a website on Sucuri’s website and pick one of the plans. Currently, there is no free plan available.

After confirming your account, you can enter your WordPress URL and choose to use Sucuri’s DNS servers.

They’ll provide you with the information to create an A record through your host. It will take up to 48 hours for your website to propagate the new data, so check on it again after a couple of days.

(Click here for this download page)

Setting up KeyCDN

KeyCDN is a widely-used network among WordPress users. The integration process works a little differently than what we’ve covered so far.

You can access a free trial, so feel free to sign up for one. After confirming your new account, you can access the dashboard.

Generating the network

On the side menu, navigate to Zones and generate a CDN URL. Click Save and wait a few minutes for the zone to activate. Then open the Manage drop-down menu and select the Purge action.

So far, we’ve generated the network your WordPress site will use to cache copies. Now you need to configure the site so it interacts with the system.

To do this, you need the Breeze WordPress Cache plugin.

Configuring the plugin

The Breeze plugin works like any best WordPress plugins — don’t forget to activate it when you’re done.

After installing and activating the plugin, go to its settings panel and paste the CDN URL you generated from KeyCDN. Click Save.

Just like that, you’ve integrated your business site with the new network! You should see the change right away in your website’s source code.

Best WordPress Plugins

There are some plugins specifically designed to integrate new CDN services into a WordPress account, and there are others that also have cross-CDN support.

As you go down your WordPress SEO checklist, don’t skimp on these additional plugins. They often come with image optimization and added security benefits.

Jetpack Site Accelerator

This Jetpack plugin extends the CDN’s features by optimizing images and allowing you to edit media. Since it relies on WordPress to use, this plugin is very efficient at its job.

EWWW Image Optimizer

This is another plugin that optimizes images for faster delivery. Unlike Jetpack, however, EWWW works with other primary services, too, so you can use it with your preferred network.

WP Fastest Cache

This plugin extends your CDN’s caching capabilities. It creates static files out of your blog’s content and then optimizes them through file minification processes. At the end of the day, it lessens the burden on your CDN, which can save you money if you pay per-GB.

W3 Total Cache

As you can guess from the name, this plugin boosts caching capabilities. The key difference from the previous plugin is it’s meant to work with Cloudflare or CloudFront in particular.

WP Super Cache

Once again, this is a caching plugin that does more than just speed up page delivery. This plugin offers extensive support for external CDNs and makes it easier to sync your business URLs.

Yoast SEO WordPress Plugin

If you’ve never been big on technical SEO, you might not have taken the time to make sure your business site is up to code. Fortunately, the Yoast SEO plugin ensures you can benefit from SEO without knowing all the technical details.

The default settings work for most users, but you can make adjustments to meet your specific needs.

In other words, just installing Yoast ensures you fix many key problems that WordPress users face out of the box. The plugin ensures your blog has:

  • Clean permalink URLs
  • Sitemaps
  • Nofollow and noindex options for all pages
  • A valid implementation of Schema.org structured data
  • htaccess files
  • robots.txt
  • OpenGraph tags for all articles or pages

Conclusion

To recap what we’ve covered, a content delivery network improves:

  • page performance
  • loading times
  • user experience
  • search ranking

A CDN assumes the majority of the load from your server, spreading it across its data centers. As a result, your website’s visitors have fast downloading times, even if they’re in another country.

Running a blog is a lot like running a small business. You need to keep things organized so your customers – or in this case, your readers – can easily find what they’re looking for. But as your blog grows, this can get tricky. WordPress tags are the key to managing your blog.

What are WordPress tags? They’re like labels for your blog posts. They help you sort your content into different topics. This makes it easier for your readers to find the posts they want. Tags also help search engines understand your blog, which can improve your visibility.

We’ll explain everything you need to know about WordPress tags. Plus, we’ll show you how tags can improve your blog’s navigation, attract more readers, and make your site more user-friendly. If you’re managing a larger blog, you’ll also see how tags can keep everything organized.

What You Should Know About WordPress Tags

WordPress tags are keywords or labels you add to your blog posts. They help categorize and describe your content. For example, if you write a blog post about social media marketing, you might use tags like “social media,” “marketing,” and “strategy.”

Tags differ from categories. Categories are the main sections of your blog, like “Marketing” or “News.” Tags are more specific and describe the details within those categories. They act like keywords, helping your readers and search engines find relevant content.

How WordPress Tags Improve User Experience

Tags help your readers find the content they want. When visitors come to your blog, they can quickly see the tags on each post. This tells them if the post matches their interests. It saves time and makes their experience on your site better.

Tags also help you organize your blog. They’re like labels on shelves in a store. They make it easier for visitors to find what they’re looking for.

If you have a large blog, tags are even more useful. You can create tag pages that collect all the posts about one topic. This lets readers easily find everything you’ve written on a specific subject.

By making your content easy to find, tags improve the overall user experience. This can lead to more engagement, longer visits, and even more sales.

Boost Your SEO with WordPress Tags

Tags aren’t just great for organizing your content for readers; they also help in search engine optimization (SEO). Search engines use tags to understand what your blog posts are about. This helps them index your pages accurately and display them in the right search results.

Create a Connected Network of Content

Tags act as internal links within your blog, connecting related posts. This network of content makes it easier for search engines to crawl and discover all your valuable pages.

Attract Targeted Search Traffic

Using relevant and specific tags increases the chances of your blog posts appearing in search results for long-tail keywords – those longer, more specific search phrases people use. This helps you attract visitors who are actively looking for the information you provide.

Improve User Experience and SEO

Tags also indirectly improve your SEO by enhancing user experience. When visitors easily find the content they want, thanks to your well-organized tags, they’re more likely to stay on your site longer. This lower bounce rate signals to search engines that your content is relevant and valuable, which can help boost your rankings.

Scale Your Blog with Tags

Tags become relevant as your blog grows and your content library expands. They help you and your readers keep everything organized and easy to navigate. Without tags, a large blog can become overwhelming and difficult to use.

Develop a Tagging Strategy

To use tags effectively on a large blog, you need a clear strategy:

  • Decide on a naming convention for your tags and stick to it. This could involve using lowercase letters, hyphens to separate words, or any other system that makes sense for your blog.
  • Don’t overload your posts with too many tags. Focus on the most relevant and descriptive ones. A good rule of thumb is to use no more than 5-10 tags per post.
  • Ensure your tags accurately reflect the topics covered in your posts. Avoid using popular keywords that aren’t directly related to your content.

Use the Tag Cloud

A tag cloud is a visual representation of your tags, with the size of each tag indicating its frequency of use. It’s a helpful navigation tool for large blogs, allowing visitors to quickly identify popular topics and explore related content.

By following a well-planned tagging strategy and using the tag cloud, you can make your large blog easy to navigate and search engine-friendly. This will keep your readers engaged and help your blog grow.

Tips for Optimizing WordPress Tags for SEO and User Experience

Now that you understand the importance of tags, practice these tips to make the most of them.

Uncover Opportunities with Keyword Research

Don’t just guess what tags to use. Keyword research helps you identify the terms your target audience is searching for. Tools like Diib or other keyword research platforms can show you the search volume for different keywords, helping you choose tags that attract more visitors to your blog.

Understand Your Audience’s Intent

Think about what your readers are looking for when they use certain search terms. Are they looking for information, trying to navigate to a specific page, or ready to make a purchase? Tailor your tags to match these different user intents. For example, use informational tags like “how-to” or “guide” for educational content, and transactional tags like “buy” or “discount” for product-focused posts.

Keep Your Tags Tidy

Regularly review your tags and remove any that aren’t being used or are redundant. This keeps your blog organized and prevents confusion for both your readers and search engines.

Track Your Tag Performance

Use analytics tools like Diib to track how your tags are performing. See which tags are driving the most traffic and engagement, and adjust your strategy accordingly. This data-driven approach ensures that your tags are always working hard to improve your blog’s visibility and user experience.

Optimize Your Blog for Search Engines and Readers

Remember, effective tagging requires a bit of strategy. Research relevant keywords, consider what your audience is looking for, and regularly review your tags to keep them organized. Tools like Diib can help you track tag performance for blog optimization.

By using tags strategically, you’ll create a user-friendly blog that also performs well in search results. This will attract more visitors, keep them engaged, and help you achieve your business goals.

WordPress as Backend Only

You have most likely realized themes are essential for WordPress. This is how you customize your WordPress website front. No matter which design you choose, there is a corresponding theme. What you may not realize is you can customize your WordPress backend as well. Even though they are not nearly as well known as the themes for the front end. WordPress offers a good selection of backend themes. A lot of people are confused because these themes are in the form of plugins.

Many WordPress users agree one of the best parts of the platforms is exceptional flexibility. You can customize almost anything you have included in your WordPress website such as:

  • Widget areas
  • Custom post types
  • Page templates

Unfortunately, many people do not realize the backend is not set in stone. You have probably placed your focus on changing the front end of your website with little thought for the backend. This means your WordPress admin area has most likely been overlooked because it was created through plugins and themes. WordPress enables you to customize your WordPress admin panel in a wide variety of different ways. Once both your front and backend are customized to your liking, you will be more satisfied with the appearance and functionality of your WordPress website.

Did you know? WordPress powers 37.6% of all websites. (kinsta.com)

Why Customize WordPress Backend?

There are two basic methods to change your WordPress admin panel, design and functionality. Your design creates the appearance of your backend. The functionality gives you the ability to interact with your backend. Once you understand how to get to the backend of WordPress and how you can change both of these concepts, you can begin to customize your entire website. The WordPress admin panel is a great place to start.

Depending on the themes and plugins you have chosen for your website, it can quickly become very cluttered. Therefore, it is important to understand how to remove, hide or rearrange the elements on your website resulting from your themes and plugins. This includes widgets and menu items. You will then have the ability to take more control over your website. If you perform a lot of work for clients, learning how to customize your backend is essential.

The creation of a much more personalized experience is possible simply by changing the design of the admin panel. A good example is the addition of customized branding. Your clients will enjoy logging into their WordPress websites when their company logo and colors are included. This is an excellent way to make your clients feel like you have provided a customized solution as opposed to a generic CMS. If you are working on your own website, the same holds true.

WordPress backend

WordPress dashboard (wordpress.org)

You will find it is easier to use WordPress once changes have been made on the backend. This is one of the key reasons so many companies hire a WordPress backend developer. Customization can also hide anything you do not require to prevent you from accidentally taking down your website. If you are a website developer, you can improve workflow and eliminate any distractions by providing only the tools necessary for taking care of the website and content.

A customized backend will be advantageous for both personal and client websites alike. You also strategically decrease the risk of receiving an emergency call in the middle of the night. You do not need to know any WordPress backend coding to use a plugin.

WordPress Backend Plugin

The theme functionality for the backend is not included by WordPress as a default. To achieve your final goal, you have to rely on plugins. Many of the back end plugins currently available are high-quality. Research some of the best plugins and read the user reviews to help determine the specifics of how each one is used before making a decision. Some of the best WordPress backend plugins are detailed below.

Blue Admin Plugin

The Blue Admin plugin offers you the ability to overhaul your WordPress dashboard. If you are interested in a simple plugin, this is a good choice. Although there are variations, the process of customizing your WordPress backend with a plugin is similar no matter which one you select. In this article, you will learn how to use the Blue Admin plugin. This will demonstrate the benefits of using a plugin for backend customization.

As soon as your installation is complete, the changes in your dashboard are immediate. Your entire backend is re-styled by your Blue Admin plugin with a white and blue color scheme similar to Facebook. There are two options for changing your default color settings. The first is opening your Blue Admin dashboard and selecting the Color Scheme screen. The second is through the Admin Menu Editor.

Your Admin Menu Editor gives you the ability to modify your WordPress menu. You can use the drag and drop feature to reorganize and customize the admin area, rename items on your menu and more. New menu items can be created with a link to the page of your choice. The only exception is your external links. If you are unhappy with menu items resulting from other plugins, they can be disabled.

WPShapere

WPShapere offers extremely advanced options for customization. If you are interested in completely overhauling your dashboard, this is an excellent plugin to choose.

Flatty

Flatty is a good plugin if you prefer the WordPress default style dashboard. You can change several branding features as opposed to performing a major overhaul for style. Flatty is one of the simplest plugins to use.

WordPress backend

WordPress using the Flatty plugin(themesinfo.com)

WP Admin UI Customize

You can control many of your WordPress admin features with this plugin. The visual interface offers you the ability to move through the items located in your WordPress admin menu so you can create a customized menu. The process is similar to widgets. Blocks can be completely eliminated from your dashboard as opposed to simply using your screen options to turn them off. –

If necessary, your login screen can be customized. The best part is all of the changes are performed according to the role of the user. A good example is the update notifications can be turned off specifically for your editors quickly and easily.

WP Help

The WP Help plugin allows the creation of detailed documentation for your WordPress website. Your documentation is then available directly through the menu bar. The idea is the creation of a knowledge base a WordPress backend developer can use for answering client questions so they can handle more by themselves as opposed to constantly contacting the developer. WP Help is slightly dated but it is still worth taking a look at.

White Label CMS

White Label CMS is a popular and free plugin capable of customization for WordPress as a backend only. You can customize numerous backend areas including:

  • Dashboard panels
  • Branding
  • Menus
  • Admin settings

You also gain control over the visibility of your dashboard panels and can add customized CSS. You can change your menu items for the role of the editors, add logos, create meta boxes, customize widgets and hide screen options.

Tabify Edit Screen

You can use screen options to disable screen elements including meta boxes. The issue is you may have some leftover. The result is often an extremely cluttered screen. Tabify Edit Screen was created to clean up your WordPress backend even more. This tool will show you how to get to the backend of WordPress, and order the items located on your Admin dashboard one on top of another.

This is accomplished with tabs as opposed to placing everything next to each other. Even though this is not technically a WordPress backend plugin, it will save you a lot of space. Tabify has a drag and drop feature enabling the creation of customized layouts for nearly all of your content including different page layouts, posts and pages.

WordPress Dashboard Themes

The dashboard themes for WordPress are a cross between plugins and themes, consistently gaining in popularity. This is essentially the backend form of the theme you are most likely familiar with for the front end. You can make changes to the functionality and design of your backend. If you are interested in a thorough overhaul of your WordPress dashboard, this is a good option requiring minimal effort.

Creating a Customized WordPress Backend

You can use all of the information detailed in this article to rewrite your WordPress Dashboard completely regardless of the type of business. You can move complete menus to the frontend, restructure your backend and eliminate anything you consider unnecessary. The result is a completely different appearance and functionality for the WordPress backend. All you have to do is use the infrastructure that is already there. You do not even need to know any WordPress backend coding to succeed.

Before you make any changes to the backend of your WordPress website or experiment with any of the plugins, you should completely back up your website. Mistakes happen but if you have a backup they can be reversed easily. If you are interested in other customization options there are numerous choices available.

Customizing the WordPress Admin Interface

You can change the appearance of your WordPress Admin Interface to look just like your front end. You can change the style of the back end by customizing the WordPress toolbar for your dashboard. You can find this bar at the top of your screen. Start by opening your dashboard, then click on the Admin tab. Below Custom Admin Bar Menus, you will see an Enable button. Clicking this button will enable the menu settings for the Custom Admin Bar. Now you need to click on Appearance > Menus. This enables you to create a new menu. You can set the display location to the name of your choice.

Adding and Testing a New WordPress Menu

Once your menu is ready, it needs to be tested. You can add elements just like you can with any other menu including:

  • Pages
  • Custom post types
  • Posts
  • Links

To the left of your Menu Structure, you will see a widget. This is where you choose the items you want to add. Once done, click Add to Menu then save your changes. You can now see the new items you added to your dashboard. You can add links to sample pages or your homepage. You should concentrate on any areas of your website you believe need special attention. This will enable you to directly reach these areas with a single click.

Customizing Screen Options

WordPress offers built-in features to customize your backend. One of these is called screen options. All you need to do is click once to turn on or off almost everything you can see on your backend screen. If you do not include tags with your posts, disabling them prevents them from showing on your editor screen. This process is also effective for redirections, trackbacks and excerpts.

You can also use screen options to determine the number of comments displayed in your comments menu. Go to any screen and look on the upper right side. You will see checkboxes you can use to make elements disappear or appear. The changes made through screen options are saved according to each user. This means your screens can be customized for each individual user on your site.

Customizing the Login Page

In addition to customizing your WordPress backend, you can also use plugins to make small changes for your login pages. You can accomplish this by making changes using the corresponding feature for your plugin. There should be an option for customization of your login page. Once your option is enabled, you will see a Settings button populate. Clicking on this button enables you to make changes in your backend background or to customize your login form.

The customization options vary slightly between plugins but you should not experience any difficulty changing your settings. This is because the process is generally straightforward. In most instances, you can enter the codes for your new hex colors for each individual section. You can determine which colors you want to use in addition to their hex codes. Once you have found what you are looking for, they can be pasted on the corresponding fields. To finish, simply click the Save Changes button.

WordPress backend

Example of a custom login page (uicookies.com)

Editing the Dashboard Footer

The chances are you will want to receive credit for the custom admin dashboard you have created. All you need to do to accomplish this is to change the message appearing in your WordPress footer. The default generally thanks you for using WordPress to create. This location is ideal for linking back to your website.

Disabling Plugin Editor and Theme

Your WordPress backend contains an extremely useful built-in editor. You do not even have to dial your server to edit your theme files. You need to be aware there is a security risk for this feature. Your website can easily be brought down by anyone with access including legitimate and illegitimate users. The chance you can perform your edits for plugin and theme files using staging areas or FTP is excellent. This eliminates the need to use your editor. This is the reason disabling your editor is recommended.

We hope that you found this article useful.

The Bottom Line

There are a lot of different methods for customizing your WordPress backend. The simplest are plugins. You can use plugins to simplify access usability, make customizations or extend your branding to cover your backend. Your best option is WordPress due to the intuitive admin interface of the platform. If you are a beginner, you might become slightly overwhelmed. This is the reason the majority of new users concentrate on the front end as opposed to the back.

Despite this, you should understand how to customize the WordPress backend. There are a lot of reasons investing your valuable time is worth the effort including improving the safety of the admin area, adding branding and making the interface easier to use for one of your clients. The good news is you can change almost anything in your backend with WordPress. If you are a beginner, you can use a plugin to change specific aspects of your backend.

If you have a little experience, you might prefer making your modifications manually. Either way, you can customize your WordPress backend to personalize your website even more. Many of the changes you can make will improve the functionality of the backend of your website in addition to the design.

You have probably purchased a product or used a service by what your friends and family say about it. A significant percentage of people will trust word of mouth as a source of information. Statistically, word of mouth as a source of marketing in business is widespread. You may have met or used this form of marketing through recommendations about a product or service from family and friends, promotions on social influencers’ content, star ratings, customer reviews, and social media platform recommendations.

A typical example of word of mouth marketing is customer reviews. Since people tend to be persuaded by others’ views, customer reviews bear testimony of what one can expect while using your services or products. These customer reviews and other general word-of-mouth testimonies do not just appear on websites only. You can encounter customer reviews, ratings, and influencer promotions on television, newspapers, billboards ads, product packaging, etc.

The general term used to describe the above marketing in business is testimonials. Therefore, a testimonial is a sales pitch from ordinary citizens consisting of a spoken or written statement commending the quality of a product or service. For a website owner, testimonials are great for your site because it is your chance to show potential customers that they can trust your services not only through your word, but the words of other customers like them. Let us see the reason why you should use testimonials.

Benefits of using testimonials

  • Social Proof: This is a powerful tool in marketing that you use every day to make decisions. Social proof helps people move from questioning whether your products are good enough to be persuaded that the advert will work for them. It is a catalyst on a chain of reactions that helps potential visitors decide whether to sign up for newsletters or buy a product.
  • Conversions: Testimonials help reassure people that they can trust what you are sharing, and it will work for them too. This translates into more email signups, more clicks on your call to action button, and of course, more buyers and subscribers.
  • Build trust: Happy customers will always pitch a positive review of your products if they have the opportunity. Some even go ahead to recommend your services to their circle of friends personally. These great reviews attract more visitors to your website.
  • Source of product information: Testimonials are a great product information source, especially when reviews contain ‘how to use’ procedure. Some customers go ahead and explain how they use your products for excellent results and any tips or tricks around it. For new members who need additional information, this is valuable data at first glance that will win them over.
  • Increase credibility: By building trust with your customers and writing a testimonial on your website, you tell potential customers that your website is credible, and your services are trustworthy. It means you are willing to listen and make changes whenever there are suggestions on the same. A credible business will get more visibility because you gain your clients’ trust with their money and time.
  • Great sales-pitch: Some testimonials will explain the benefits of using your products and services. With a positive sales-pitch, other potential customers will get the necessary confidence that your work is the right choice.

The testimonial plugin wordpress uses comes in different forms; they can be images, videos, or quotes. With the benefits of testimonials in mind, displaying them in a presentable way is a process that requires some technical help. Hiding your testimonials on a separate page does not help achieve their purpose. It would help if you let them shine and speak for themselves.

WordPress testimonial plugins come in handy in this case by taking over the task of arranging your testimonials attractively and reducing the workload on your hands. These plugins simplify the process of adding social proof to your site once you have a collection.

There are several testimonial plugin WordPress free to use options on the web right now with different features. You might have put so much work into launching your WordPress site and may think that it is finally time to catch a breath. But guess what? You are still not completely done.

The growth of the internet has seen the emergence of malicious cybercriminals who are keen on finding any possible vulnerabilities to infiltrate systems and cause damages. Some of the most common attack vectors that website owners are vulnerable to are malicious redirects, backdoor attacks, Cross-site scripting, Denial of Service attacks, Brute force attacks, among others.

Generally, all websites are vulnerable to malicious attacks. Even so, WordPress sites tend to be a ripe target for data thieves, distributors of malicious codes, and hackers. Moreover, it is a common target for cybercriminals because it is among the most popular Content Management Systems (CMS).

Its popularity increases the chances of cybercriminals finding an insecure site. But, if you own a WordPress site, you don’t have to run for the hills. We have compiled the best WordPress security tips checklist to ensure that your WordPress Website is safe.

Use the Latest Version of WordPress

Every new WordPress update comes with improved functionality and better security. When a WordPress version has been in the market for a significant time, malicious hackers may have found vulnerabilities and ways to exploit those vulnerabilities to hijack a website.

Each new update fixes any existing bugs and patches any issues. Using outdated versions puts you at risk of attacks. Another significant advantage of using the latest WordPress versions is that newer versions usually have superior features and better compatibility.

You may not be keen on the new features, but you need to maintain regular updates to take advantage of security releases.  Using well-updated software ensures that any visitors to your site enjoy a better experience since every component of your site will be working optimally.

When users have a great experience with your site, they are more likely to stay on your site. And this will also boost your SEO strategy.

Best WordPress Security Plugin

Security plugins secure WordPress Websites by limiting requests from an IP address or blocking an IP address if it exceeds the set threshold. They recognize legitimate crawlers and don’t throttle or block them.

Several WordPress security plugins to choose from, but some of the best ones are Sucuri Security, MalCare Security, iThemes Security, and Defender.

Enable Web Application Firewall (WAF)

Firewalls are software or hardware tools that act as a defence between your website and all incoming traffic. For example, a Web Application firewall helps secure web applications by analyzing and filtering any traffic between the web application and the internet. They are instrumental in protecting against cross-site scripting, cross-site forgery, SQL injections, file inclusions, DDoS attacks, etc.

Firewalls are designed to either block traffic that is malicious or only allows safe traffic. Web Application firewalls also help to secure WordPress websites through virtual patching before WordPress releases official patches.

The best thing about firewalls is that they offer protection continuously rather than on a reactive basis. That ensures that you can prevent attacks before they infiltrate your website.

In case of an attempted attack, you can clean your site quicker and with much less money. You could opt to use a WordPress Security plugin to install a firewall for your site. It is the simplest way to add a firewall since it does not require full server access or lots of technical skills.

With WAF, the cherry on top is improved site speed and performance via advanced caching techniques. As a result, you get a website that is faster and safer.

Move Your WordPress Site to HTTPS

HTTPS (Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol) sites provide secure transmission of information across the internet. They ensure that any confidential information being conveyed online is not at risk of unauthorized access. To move to an HTTPS site, first you need to buy SSL certificate from trusted SSL certificate providers. After that you need to install SSL certificate in your server.

An SSL is a cryptographic protocol that encrypts data transmission between a visitor’s browser and your website. With this encryption, any malicious people sniffing around, hoping to steal sensitive information, will find it almost impossible to decipher the encrypted information.

Moving to an HTTPS site does not only guarantee security but also improves ranking in search engine results. This is because search engine giants are taking the initiative to ensure that users are safe when interacting on the internet.

We hope that you found this article useful.

I’ve looked at a lot of similar tools and this is one of my favorites and most used. Saves me time everyday and whenever i have a few minutes I jump in and knock a few things off my list or tell someone else to jump in. Some things surprised me like I didn’t know that back-links could hurt rankings. Good to know and time to dominate.Thank you so much

Limit User Access to Your Site

WordPress has several user roles, with the administrator role as the most superior one. An administrator enjoys unlimited access to the whole website. Some websites allow all their users to have admin privileges.  However, this is very risky since some users may take advantage of that to run havoc and cause damages to your site by creating ghost admins or backdoors to let them in if their accounts ever get blocked.

You, therefore, cannot risk having all users free reign over your WordPress Website. Several WordPress plugins can help you to restrict user access. User Role Editor and Restrict Categories WordPress plugins are beneficial in customizing your WordPress users and restricting access to only specific sections of your website.

Add Two Factor Authentication

The two-factor authentication technique involves going through a two-step process to log in to an account.  You not only need your password to access login but also a second method. The second method could be an SMS, phone call, one-time password (OTP), etc.

While an attacker may have laid hands on your login credentials, it is unlikely that they will have your cell phone to verify with before accessing your accounts. It is a potent WordPress security tip against Brute force attacks on your WordPress Website. You could use the free WordPress plugin, Google Authenticator.

Protect Your wp-config.php

wp-config.php is a significant configuration file in all WordPress Websites that contain critical information about the website. The file has various details like host, user name, security keys, WordPress data connection details, etc. This is information that allows your WordPress Website to connect with the database to retrieve or store data.

These sensitive details would cause you a major headache if they fell into the wrong hands. That makes protecting the wp-config.php file a matter of utmost significance.

To protect the file, you could use an htaccess file, move the wp-config.php file from the root directory, modify the file to remove lines containing sensitive information like database connection details and WordPress security keys.

Conclusion

Having a secure WordPress Website should be a priority for any site owner. Staying clear from malicious cyber-attacks helps protect your website’s reputation. It also builds trust with the visitors to the site.

The post Things to Do After WordPress Installation appeared first on diib® - Learn.

WordPress is one of the most popular and widely used contact management software (CMS), free of cost, open-sourced and written in PHP and paired with MySQL and MariaDB database. Today, WordPress has become the simplest and most popular way to create a website or blog for both personal and business purposes.

With the help of WordPress, any type of website can be created, including Business websites, E-commerce websites, Blogs, Portfolios, Resumes, Social Networks, Membership sites and many other types of sites that help increase businesses and take them to the online platform.

However, after downloading and installing WordPress, there are some steps that one has to follow to make their website presentable and more secure so that it will be beneficial for their business and can attract a lot of customers.

1. Create a strong password

Having a strong password is the most crucial step for saving the WordPress site from cyber attackers. One must change the password and should make it stronger so that it becomes difficult to guess.

Passwords should not include the name, date of birth, or mail address of the user; they must be unique and different in its way.

It is advised to have a password that must include a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numerals, and special symbols to make it strong and save the website from being hacked.

A strong password is like the backbone of any website, which protects it from being hacked and builds its trust among the customers who shop products or services from the business and increases the chances of being visited by customers more often.

2. Delete default content

A new WordPress site comes with some default content that is advisable to be deleted to keep the site clean and presentable. This can be an impressive step for those who visit it for the first time.

Deleting the default content makes the website look more professional, attracts more customers, and builds its reputation in their minds. Moreover, it is also advised to have a first post to be more welcoming and on a positive note and display some offers for the customers.

3. Check the server’s configuration

After the WordPress installation, server requirements must be addressed. The server configuration plays an important role in guiding the complete role and keeping the process smooth; there are certain processes through which you can gather information about the server configuration.

In addition, post-installation activities are largely guided by the server’s configuration, which the website owners often overlook. Therefore, all the decisions regarding the server configuration should be taken thoughtfully.

Organizations worldwide are taking serious measures against these attacks to provide a better experience for the customers. Some security tools like SSL certificates can guard against the cyber world’s threats, such as phishing and MITM attacks. 2. Broken Link Checker

When Google crawls through your website and finds broken links, it will see this as a bad user experience. Your WordPress probably has several internal and external links from different sources, and you may not have control over all of them. For example, missing pages and images from other websites that you had linked in your content may become broken links if they do not have redirects.

Broken Link Checker will scan your content and reveal all broken links by placing them on a list. You will then be notified about them on the dashboard or via email. The best part is, once the list is revealed, you do not have to go to the pages one by one, looking for these broken links. You can perform the fixing, editing, and deleting of these links right on the Broken Link Checker tool. The plugin also offers an option function where it can make broken links display differently in post.

When the plugin is active, it will perform its operations continuously, scanning for your content and notifying you of any broken links. However, this may slow down the activities of your site if the plug is left active throughout. A recommendation is to enable it when going through your links and disable it once you have fixed any link issues. Here is what that plugin looks like:

With so many websites all competing for visitors from search engines, it can be difficult when you’re trying to stand out from the crowd. This is particularly important for companies that are trying to target customers in their local area.

When a user searches for a keyword or phrase in Google or other search engines, they often analyze these searches to look for local relevancy. They try to determine if the search terms might be intended as a search for something that’s in a user’s local area.

As a result, you’ll often see listings of local businesses at the top of search results above the normal organic listings of non-local websites. Locality gets prioritized. That’s why it’s crucial that businesses understand how to reach local customers.

Yoast Local SEO is a plugin that many companies have taken advantage of for this reason. It can help your business in targeting customers who are searching for local terms. It can also improve the overall user experience for local users when they visit your site.

What is Yoast SEO?

Yoast SEO is a popular WordPress plugin that helps to optimize your website’s rankings in search engines. It does this by making suggestions on what needs to be improved within your site.

Grammar, spelling, tone, keyphrases, overall readability, and other aspects of your content are analyzed for possible improvements.

Yoast SEO helps a website communicate with crawling bots and search engines by providing information to them such as site descriptions, archiving preferences, and which pages to be included in site maps.

Yoast Local SEO

Yoast’s Local SEO plugin is a more targeted offer from the makers of Yoast SEO. It takes website optimization a step further for those who want to ensure that they are reaching their local audiences in search engines.

As a local SEO WordPress tool, it can add greater functionality within your site so that location information is more relevant to users. It can also optimize your site on the backend by using metadata to communicate information to search engines more efficiently.

This plugin has quickly become very popular within the SEO industry, which is why every Yoast local SEO review you’ll find is likely to say great things about it. This is because it’s easy to use and packs many advantages for businesses.

By using this plugin you’ll be able to:

  • Communicate vital business information to search engines.
  • Improve on-site location details so customers can find your business.
  • Compliment features available in Yoast SEO to add more geo-targeted details.
  • Add additional local-focused features to WooCommerce.

Features:

Store Locator

Search engines such as Google look at everything on your site including how easy a site is to navigate. When looking at which search results to return to users, their search engine takes things such as ease of use into consideration.

A store locator can greatly improve this type of functionality. This is significant for anyone who wants to improve their on-page optimization with users in mind.

The store locator feature in Local SEO allows you to add a locator box anywhere on your website. Adding it is as simple as clicking a button and then choosing how you want it to be displayed.

The locator option can automatically add a customizable Google map on any page with the search box. for example:

What is Yoast and How Can it Improve My Local SEO?

It also allows for other customizable functions and details within the locator box including:

  • Returned results limit – the number of results that should be returned to users when they perform a search.
  • Appearance of results – the information about each business within the search results that you want your users to see. You can add or omit information such as the telephone book numbers, zip codes, physical addresses, or website information about each business.

In addition to this, there’s also a sidebar widget option which adds a small sidebar widget to any pages you choose. It allows users to search for a local branch of your business using zip code or town/city names. You could add this widget to any pages where visitors may find it useful.

This translates into greater functionality so users can quickly find a location without having to go to a separate page on your site for this. This widget is fully customizable as well so you can designate what criteria users can perform searches with.

Instant Contact Page

By inputting your business details into the plugin’s interface, Local SEO automatically displays these details on your contact page in an SEO-friendly format.

If you have separate contact pages for each of your locations, you can easily input all of the information on a single page within the interface and let the plugin do the rest. You can add a map or the previously mentioned store locator here in optimal places on the page as well.

Customizable Map Options

When adding maps to your pages using this local SEO plugin, you can decide on how they look and function. Do you want the map to be a terrain-based map or a satellite-based one? Do you want users to be able to drag the map and zoom in or should it be static and remain in place? You have full control over these types of customizations.

You can:

  • Change Dimensions – designate how small or large you want maps to be on your pages.
  • Preset Zoom – if you want a map to stay zoomed in or out by default, you can set the degree of the zoom that you prefer.
  • Enable the Route Planner – you have the option of deciding whether you want a route planner feature to be available to your users. They can then decide how they’ll get to your business. This helps to increase the time spent on the page.
  • Show or Limit Multiple Locations – you can set a map to show all of your locations on the map or just the one closest to a user.

Local Relevancy SEO Improved

This plugin can also improve your site’s locational relevancy in search engine results. When a user searches Google or Yahoo for your business name, you want them to find results that are relevant to their location. You don’t want them finding a location that’s further away from them than another location.

All the on-site optimizations and behind-the-scenes coding that this plugin does will help search engines with this. Google will have a better idea of how far each location is to a user because it will have much more information than simply a business branch’s town or city name.

After utilizing this local SEO plugin WordPress free tool, users can find the location nearest to them first in search results. This may also help your site’s overall SEO because of the influence on ease of use functionality.

Google has an impressive ability at determining how your users engage with your site. When a visitor finds your company’s site in search engines but reaches the landing page for a branch that’s not the closest one to them, they then must search your site for a closer location. This means they are spending a minimal amount of time on pages that are irrelevant to them. All of this has the potential to affect your site’s ease of use. To begin go here on the Yoast plugin:

What is Yoast and How Can it Improve My Local SEO?

Address-Optimized Coding

If you’re unfamiliar with Schema.org, it’s a collaborative project started by Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, and Yandex employees. It’s basically a form of markup language that the major search engines can read behind the scenes of your website.

Within the HTML coding of your website schema tags can communicate addresses, phone numbers, business names, and other information to search engines.

Think of this as an interpreter between two people who might speak different languages. Schema helps search engines understand your business details by communicating in a language that’s easier for the search engines to understand.

When search engines understand what your site is telling them, they can display the information correctly to users.

The Yoast SEO Plugin automatically creates schema tags in the background of your website. It takes your business details and fits them into schema tags for you. For those who want to truly optimize their site in search engines, adding schema language to your site is a must. For example:

What is Yoast and How Can it Improve My Local SEO?

The benefits of this feature are:

  • Saves Time and Effort – those who don’t want to learn to code schema markup can save time and effort by letting Yoast do all of the work for them.
  • Ensure Accuracy – schema tags are implemented correctly to the standards that Google, Yahoo, and other search engines demand.
  • Communicate Current Hours – opening and closing hours are communicated to search engines with schema tags when you update hours on your site. This ensures search engines display the correct times to users.

Customizing Hours of Operation

In addition to offering automatic schema markup, this local SEO plugin WordPress free tool also has a few ways that you can customize the hours of operation that display on your pages and in search engines.

For each location you have, you can:

  • Show/Hide Hours of Operation – a single show/hide button within the interface allows you to quickly show or hide your opening and closing hours to users.
  • Communicate Messages About Hours – using three easy to fill out boxes, you can type in custom messages that will show up next to the hours for situations where hours may change or where certain locations may have special hours. When a business is either closed, open 24 hours, or open 24/7, a different message can be displayed for each scenario. This is particularly useful for businesses who regularly change their hours and must inform their customers.

Sitemap Generator

You may already know about XML sitemaps. Well the days of having to generate them yourself are over with Yoast’s SEO plugin.

For those who have never used sitemaps, they are exactly what they sound like: Maps of your website. It’s a way of telling search engines not only what pages they should index, but also which pages they should not index.

Sitemap files include coding in them, known as XML, which is a markup language in the same way schema is. These files allow web crawlers to find changes more quickly when you update anything on your site. It also ensures that search engines know about all the pages of your site so users can find them when they search for related topics.

Yoast SEO does all of this automatically. You can turn the sitemaps feature on or off at your desire. Plus, when it’s turned on, it allows you to designate which pages should be indexed and which shouldn’t with the press of a button. Here is where you should go to enable the sitemaps feature:

What is Yoast and How Can it Improve My Local SEO?

The benefit of this is that it works in tandem with the Local SEO plugin by allowing automatic integration of KML files.

Automatic KML Integration

KML is a markup language in the same way schema tags and XML are. However, KML files are all about geographic locations.

Keyhole Markup Language, or KML, is a way for you to better communicate your company’s location to Google Earth, Google Maps, and other programs that read KML. This type of coding should normally be included in your XML sitemap.

It allows you to specify the exact coordinates (latitude and longitude) of any business. This ensures that users who are checking maps or satellite data for your business can easily find it based on the location of placemarks.

This is very important because many users check maps to find nearby locations of businesses before traveling to them.

Yoast Local SEO for WooCommerce

WooCommerce is a free WordPress plugin that allows website owners to quickly and easily add storefront functionality to their sites. Its features include product display capabilities, payment acceptance, shipping options, and more.

Originally, Yoast had two separate local-focused plugins: SEO Local and SEO Local for WooCommerce. These two plugins are now combined together. SEO local for WooCommerce features are now available for all SEO Local users (who are using the WooCommerce plugin).

One of the main benefits of this is the ability for users to designate local pickup for purchases. When doing so, they can find a location nearest to them using the store locator functionality to arrange for local pickup.

Also, you have greater email personalization with Yoast Local SEO for WooCommerce. Customers can receive updates via email on their shipped purchases and email templates based on location details can be used.

We hope that you found this article useful.

WordPress refers to the content Management system on which websites are created and maintained. WordPress offers great backend features that enable your website to run and function properly. Thus, many things happen in the background that is likely to slow down your website and increase its load time leading. WordPress optimization is vital because it ensures this tool functions at its optimal at all times.

What is WordPress optimization?

Understanding what is WordPress optimization and what your site has to gain from it is important. It ensures you know what to look for and where to focus your energy. WordPress optimization refers to the process of customizing a WordPress site to enhance its performance and produce better speed. An optimized website is a make or break for every site working to attract more visitors.

In the current time we live in, the last thing people want is a site that takes too long to load as this not only discourages them from using your site but negatively affects your conversion numbers leading to low sales. Thus, it is essential to know how to optimise a wordpress site to ensure that it retains traffic. This factor also helps it get high rankings by Google to ensure accessibility to the relevant audience.

WordPress performance optimization and WordPress SEO optimization play a vital role in ranking a site and in increasing the total sales made. Thus, it is one of those areas that should be well thought out and properly invested in.

How do I optimize my WordPress site?

Some of the strategies that are essential to WordPress performance optimization and informs the process of how to optimise a WordPress website include;

Choose an excellent hosting plan

A web host is one of the most vital things to consider when analyzing how to optimize wordpress sites. This is because a site can never be faster than the server that hosts it. So, no matter how much effort you make in optimizing your WordPress website, your efforts are in vain if your hosting plan is limiting or inadequate. An excellent host is not cheap, but the one that provides value for money. Most people opt for shared hosting because it is economical, but its long load time makes it inefficient for business.

Thus, optimizing managed WordPress hosting goes a long way in ensuring your WordPress functionality is perfect to handle your traffic and have excellent speed. You should also pick a hosting plan that meets your needs. It is better to spend more on an excellent host plan as it ensures your WordPress is fully optimized and creates an opportunity for you to work with experts. These individuals help in making your website journey easy, allowing you to focus on other aspects of your business to help it grow. The image below shows a few hosting options WordPress offers:

Opt for a fast WordPress theme

Properly coded and lightweight WordPress themes play an important role in WordPress SEO optimization. Select a WordPress theme that needs you to make a few additions to it to ensure you do not overload it with too many code lines that make it slow. Most WordPress themes are built to support efficient performance; however, most people ruin their speed by adding their own unique features that make the sites take forever to load.

Choose WordPress sites that do not offer too much room for tweaking as it may be easy for you to make the changes. This factor ensures that the servers do not find it hard to run through reading and sending information which inhibits its performance. When adding codes, ensure you hire an expert to check that only lightweight code is properly embedded on the existing code to enhance optimization and increase performance.

Use updated plugins and WordPress software

Using the latest updates goes a long way in optimizing and understanding how to optimise a wordpress website. Updates provide you an opportunity to enjoy the latest technology. WordPress developers are constantly working to improve speed and develop themes and plugins that focus on how to optimize wordpress sites. Thus, by keeping all these factors updated, you ensure you place your website on the right track of enjoying the latest technology.

Using the recent themes and updates ensures the site is protected from an outdated site, prone to new attacks or leakage. New plugins and themes also come with compressed and improved codes that ensure your website takes less time to load information and protects you from attacks. Recent plugins also support caching and using static HTML files that improve performance and deliver excellent speed.

Utilize image optimization

Images play a vital role in enhancing user experience, representing your products, or directing your guests. They are thus indispensable, especially in online stores. Thus, you can not entirely do away with images. However, having high-quality images that take up less storage space and bandwidth ensures you provide a quality experience to your users and enhance the loading time.

Various image plugins work to optimize images and seamlessly reduce their sizes without altering their quality. Purchasing or using hosting plans that provide such optimization is essential to ensure your site automatically detects large images and works on them to ensure your visual message is still passed without affecting your site. Using optimization channels such as lazy load ensures your optimized files that are still large get to load as one scrolls through your site.

By doing this, you cut down on your site load time while ensuring the message is passed. Installing Lazyload works by loading images one at a time, starting with the top ones. This process ensures your website is up to speed and your image quality is maintained.

Use optimized WordPress databases

Optimizing your database is essential, especially for sites like WordPress that are database driven. You can optimize your database through PhpMyAdmin or plugins such as WP-Optimize or WP-DB Manager. The mentioned plugins and sites offer you an opportunity to carry out several activities such as deleting saved drafts, spam, trashed posts and comments that take up too much space in your database. They also ensure only relevant and useful code is left in the database, positively optimizing it. Here is an example of the WP-Optimize plugin:

WordPress Optimization: Get the Best Performance

Since your WordPress speed is directly influenced by the database that powers it, a fast database directly translates to a high-speed optimized WordPress site. This optimization enables your site to quickly pick information from the site and act on it accordingly. Having lines of code that eliminate loops and properly arrange tables ensures your servers do not get a hard time trying to get information that may delay the amount of time taken to retrieve the data.

Compress website files

It is tempting to write codes in a readable manner as it makes it easy for other developers to understand your code. As much as this is a great initiative, it works against your site’s overall performance by increasing its load time due to the spaces experienced in your site. Compressing your website files includes minimizing your files and codes by removing all spaces that make your site slow.

WordPress plugins such as auto-optimize have made this process easy by allowing you to eliminate the spaces with a click of the button. The plugin not only eliminates white spaces but also compresses your files by identifying and merging JavaScript and CSS files with the same lines of code. This compression reduces the number of codes in your site, enhancing its overall speed.

Use Content delivery networks

CDN plays a vital role in offloading the amount of static information in your site. CDN ensures your primary server has less to handle which positively impacts your site’s speed. Files such as images, CSS files and scripts copied from your primary site make use of CDN to ensure shorter distance coverage which helps shorten its load time. You should also note that while the internet is experiencing advanced communication achievements, distance is still the same. Thus, prompt delivery of information from different areas remains the same.

Using CDN ensures that information stored on servers in particular parts of the world reaches you quickly. You do not have to worry about distance or hinder your server response as the CDN acts as a connecting bridge. It works by accessing static content from your site and replicating it to the nearest server allowing you to access the information faster.

Choose a type of CDN that is easy to use and provides a friendly and simple interface. Different CDNs also offer different security levels to your site; thus, choosing one with powerful firewalls and connections ensures your information is not intercepted or wrongly changed. The image below shows where to go on WordPRess to control your CDN:

Use quality themes and plugins

The quality of themes and plugins used is essential as high-quality plugins ensure quick interpretation and easy understanding of code, leading to less load time. Most people focus on having fewer themes and plugins and take this as an ideal way of ensuring proper optimization. However, having properly written code themes and plugins ensures they can pass information clearly and have proper security to optimize wordpress sites and protect it fully.

Plugins that focus on optimize performance, SEO and ecommerce platforms tend to have long lines of code. However, if these codes’ quality is high and properly laid out, they are unlikely to slow down the site. Having too much information jumbled up and written by a novice developer works against you. It gives you an aesthetic website that looks good but has complex codes, making it hard for the servers to navigate and deliver information leading to longer load time.

Install a caching plugin

A caching plugin works to optimize your site by reducing the number of times a similar query repeats itself, server access to static resources, MYSQL database access, and HTTP requests. This action is essential as it temporarily stores the user’s information reducing the load time it takes to access this information once a similar query gets invoked.

Having website caching plugins installed provides a better experience to your users and ensures they continually come to your site. Caching is essential for online stores as it d provides a fast and reliable service making your site useful and preferred for shopping. This graph shows the improvement in speed tests certain caching plugins have caused:

Delete or control post revisions

Did you know that once you post a draft to your WordPress, it saves the information indefinitely? This action means that every draft written on all pages of your site is saved and stored, taking up your storage space.

Installing plugins such as the WP revision control plugin offers many options to deal with the problem. The plugin allows you to delete drafts freeing up space and set up the limit of the number of post revisions stored for every page.

The process ensures the availability of space while letting you choose the drafts you need for future reference. However, having the power to eliminate all drafts that have served their purpose allows you to optimize your site by successfully freeing up tons of space and making your code light, allowing it to load faster.

Disable pingbacks and trackbacks

Pingbacks and trackbacks refer to the communication between websites. WordPress sites such as bloggers developed to provide an opportunity for sites to communicate with each other. A pingback or trackback alerts you every time your site is mentioned or tagged in another blog. Especially for established sites that have their sites mentioned often, this may mean too many pingbacks to your site, slowing it down.

By disabling trackbacks and pingbacks, you get an opportunity to optimize your site without affecting your code as it does not tamper with your backlinks. This action provides you with clean code allowing your site to load faster. Here is where you need to go to complete this action:

WordPress Optimization: Get the Best Performance

Delete unused themes and plugins

Deletion of unused themes and plugins is a site maintenance activity that should get carried out often. After deciding which themes and plugins are fast or doing away with outdated themes and plugins, it is essential to delete them to free up space. Storing of unused themes is a practice that hoards information at the expense of your site speed, leading to longer load time.

Enable gZip compression

Serving your guests with gZip compressions enables them to get small sizes of your website and enhance your load time. Having plugins that support the compression of documents ensures your users get quality information in a compressed manner. These plugins work to maintain and safeguard the quality and authenticity of information while reducing its size.

You can enable gZip compression through your cPanel in cases of using a shared server. Utilizing the latest GZip compression models also ensures you get an opportunity to use the best compression and save up time leading to efficient speed. For example:

Eliminate spam

Spam is a huge nuisance that negatively affects your website speed. Deleting spam comments prevents a buildup and saves your site storage space and time. Having a tool that identifies spam and automatically deletes them ensures you do not have a lot of work and automatically optimize your site.

Opt for Multipurpose plugins

Plugins play an important role in optimizing your site. They help you automatically deal with issues and offer solutions to your site. However, not all plugins are useful, and some have intertwined purposes, making them redundant. By prioritizing your plugins, you ensure your site only has plugins it uses, which solves its problems. Opting for plugins that solve more than one issue is also essential to optimize your site and make it fast. You can thus delete outdated plugins and have those you do not use removed to ensure optimum performance.

Implement CSS sprite

CSS sprite plays two vital roles that are essential in website optimization. They work by saving your bandwidth, improving your site’s overall performance. CSS sprite also reduces the number of image requests by merging these requests and arranging the images systematically. This process reduces the load time and is common among video game designs where the same request gets repeatedly made.

Perform routine maintenance on plugins

Routine maintenance enables you to identify outdated and older plugins protecting you from attacks. Carrying out routine maintenance also helps you identify loopholes in your plugin features, providing an opportunity to seal loopholes that may be used against your site. So how does regular maintenance help optimize my WordPress site? Well by helping you identify unused plugins that fill up space. Routine maintenance includes regular updates to your site to ensure it uses the latest plugin versions.

What are Tags on WordPress Blog?

A tag is a default tool in WordPress for categorizing your WordPress posts. There can be multiple tags in your post for visitors to click to locate similar posts using the same tag. When you consider WordPress categories vs tags, the difference is your tags are optional. This means you decide whether to include tags in your post or publish without them.

Tags are generally located in your sidebar or under your post. When a tag is clicked by your visitor, a tag page or archive page is opened by WordPress. This indexes all of your custom post types and posts with the same tag. Your tags are extremely important for content organization. Your tags also have a direct impact on both your SEO efforts and user experience.

WordPress Categories vs Tags

Both WordPress categories and tags are part of your WordPress taxonomy. They simply classify your posts. You can use categories and tags in different ways. The main differences include:

Broad vs Specific

The main difference between tags and categories is the topic size you are covering. Broad post topics are grouped under categories. Specific content details are described by your tags. A good example is a pets blog. Your main categories can be pet food, pet health, pet toys and pet grooming. If one of your titles is the best pet food for your dog, you will include it under the pet food category.

Your article is also included in pet health. You can use the dog food brand and dog food nutrients as your tag. The name for each one of your categories should not be too specific because you will not be able to include more than a few of your blog posts. Specific brand names and celebrities promoting dog food brands work much better as tags on WordPress blogs than categories for this reason. The image below shows another example of categories vs tags:

Necessary vs Optional

Another difference between categories and tags is whether or not they are required for your post. Tags are optional but categories are necessary. If no category is assigned to your post, it will automatically be sent By WordPress into the default category of Uncategorized. You can change the name of the default category by navigating to your Settings.

Standalone Entity vs Parent-Child Relationship

The hierarchical relationship is different for tags and categories. You can put subcategories or child categories to the parent because they are hierarchical. A good example is under your pet food category you can add subcategories including puppy food, adult dog food, senior dog food and diet dog food. Under these subcategories, you can include more subcategories such as vegan adult dog food or indoor dog food for senior dogs.

Tags do not have a parent-child relationship. The tags on WordPress blogs have no level and are standalone. Your tags and categories also produce different permalinks. To view the difference, a custom permalink structure should be used. Once this has been enabled you can see your base permalink. Both taxonomies have different practical uses but can be included in your posts. One post can have numerous tags and one to two categories.

How to Use Tags in WordPress

The process of using tags on WordPress blogs is fairly simple. You can only use tags for new blog posts. This can be accomplished with the steps below.

Step One

Navigate to your admin dashboard. Now go to Posts, then Add New.

Step Two

Look for the tags box to the right of your visual editor, then enter the tags you want to include. You must use a comma to separate each tag. For example:

Tag WordPress and SEO

WordPress tags are extremely important for your SEO. When you use tags properly, you can improve your SEO ranking. If used incorrectly, tags can harm your SEO efforts. WordPress is currently the best CMS for your SEO. Once installed, there are features built-in to handle the search engines. All of the search engines are guided with the predetermined features for indexing the tags, categories, pages and posts within your website. The information is then stored in the database.

Using tags has certain faults that can damage the indexing process. Make certain you do not create similar names for a tag and a category or you will have two identical tag and category pages. When this happens, there is often confusion among the search engines as to which one should be ranked first. The issue of similar duplication can result when you use plural or singular nouns for your tags. A good example is a similarity between dog food and dog foods.

You can choose either one but it needs to be used consistently for your tag. There should not be any unique content for your tag pages on their own. Tags should only contain the excerpts for your posts. You should write your unique content for your individual post pages. This is the reason the search engines prefer crawling different post pages as opposed to tag pages. WordPress will create a new tag page automatically when you have set a new tag.

Displaying Tag Cloud in WordPress

Using tags for WordPress arranges your posts while improving the accessibility and usability of your website. This means you can create a better experience for your users by adding tags. You can further improve the experience of your visitors with a tag cloud widget. This will show every tag you have set. Only one click is necessary for your users to skim your tags to locate their favorite subject. Here is an example of a tag cloud widget from WordPress:

Your site might be considered extremely common for your specific niche. You can help your users find interesting topics not available through your competitors by using a tag cloud. To ensure your tags are more popular, you can use a larger font size. You can create your tag cloud widget with the following steps.

Even if it is popular, there might be tags you do not want to be included in the cloud. You can exclude them with the following steps.

Step Three

Copy your tag ID, then return to Customizer > Widgets. Click on the settings for your tag cloud widget to open them.

Step Four

Find the Exclude box, then paste your tag ID. Click Save to finish.

Performing Extensive Keyword Research

If you want quality web traffic to be driven to your site and intend to improve your website ranking with the leading search engines, your WordPress site needs to include tags and categories with rich keywords. You can conduct a competitive analysis including in-depth research for keywords to choose the most relevant set of keyword phrases for your website.

You should use them for your categories and tags to ensure your audience and the search engines can locate your website immediately. You need to make certain your categories and tags are both relevant to your posts. This will increase the readability and accessibility of your posts.

Do Not Make Separate Author Categories

The majority of site admins with a WordPress multi-author website create separate categories for all of their authors for streamlining and post separation. This is unnecessary since WordPress has an author categorization system. When you use your name for publishing new posts on your website, WordPress automatically displays your name on the corresponding page.

Using Descriptive and Simple Names for Categories

To ensure the best results for your WordPress categories, you need to use descriptive and clear names. This provides your new users with clear information regarding your site and the kinds of posts to expect. A clear and simple category name enables your users to find the content they want easily. Place your focus on the creation of descriptive and user-centric categories for multiple blog posts as opposed to getting too complicated. The image below shows a few examples of simple but descriptive categories:

Organized Structure is Important Prior to Publication

Prior to publishing any content for your site, create your organizational structure first. This eliminates the requirement of page directions when altering existing tags, subcategories and categories. If your keyword research is good, you can use categories and tags to ensure enhanced visibility for your posts. You should not use more than five to 10 categories for your site or it will become overly complicated.

Avoid Duplication for Your Tags and Categories

Your tags and categories are meant to help your visitors locate specific content quickly and easily. Do not use a tag and category with the same name on your site. A good example is using Nutritious Dog Foods for both your category and tag. The result is confusion among the search engines due to a duplication issue. The search engines will not know which results to display for consumer searches. Here are examples of duplicate tags:

Avoid Using Excessive WordPress Tags

Using too many WordPress tags can impact the accessibility and usability of your website. There is no way to determine the exact number of tags beneficial for one blog post. This being said, you need to know a separate archive page will be generated for every tag you use on your website. If you have an extremely large number of blog posts, you are better off compressing your tags to link to a minimum of two or three posts. When you use tags, consistency is the key.

Use WP.org Tags and WP.com Tags Carefully

There are two different versions of WordPress. These are:

  • WordPress.com is a free blogging platform
  • WordPress.org is the most frequently used CMS

There are fundamental differences in the two WordPress versions regarding the types of services. Since both platforms are distinctive, you need to be careful when you use categories and tags for each platform. You can use more tags with WordPress.com. The operators of WordPress websites can create massive fan bases by using a variety of tag options to help users locate their favorite posts.

If you have a WordPress.org site, duplication issues can be created by using too many tags. This can result in a disastrous impact on the general performance of your website. Search engines often assume numerous tags are category duplications. This means your content can be considered irrelevant for display in the search results.

Avoiding Plural vs Singular Dilemmas for Tags and Categories

You might be confused regarding using plural or singular tags and categories when publishing your content. This is a common issue when using the same word for two different tags, one in the plural form and the other in the singular. A good example is cat or cats. You do not need to be confused since both forms are not necessary at the same time. Consider your specific needs, then decide if plural or singular tags and categories will work best.

Do Not Ignore Tags and Categories

If your tags or categories are inappropriate, your site can be penalized by the search engines. A lot of site owners have panicked because of this. You can avoid the risk of being penalized by eliminating all unnecessary tags and categories before you publish your content. This practice is considered unfair regarding website optimization because if you do not include tags and categories on your site, visitors will have a hard time searching for posts.

The performance of your pages will also be impacted often resulting in fewer clicks for your site and a lower placement for the search engine results. Do not think about any of this. When you need tags or categories for your site, use them. If you are confused as to what is considered appropriate, the recommendation is to consult with an experienced SEO professional for WordPress website optimization.

Properly Structuring Your Categories

If all of your posts belong to a specific and related category, do not forget your categories need to be structured. WordPress wants all of your posts to belong to a minimum of one category. This should be done before your content is published. This will help your posts be found by both web readers and search engines due to the specific categories.

What are Tags in WordPress Posts?

If you want to use specific keywords to identify a piece of your content, tags are a good option. Choose a few words you believe best describe your post. The key difference between tags and categories is the way they are used. Generally speaking, categories are an indication of the genre of your post. Tags are a lot more in-depth and an indication of what your post is all about. This means you should be using several tags for all of your posts.

You need to use tags to identify specific aspects of your post. A good example is if your post is about popular restaurants in Cincinnati. You can use tags for Cincinnati, menus, ambiance, service, pricing, etc. When your visitors read all of your tags together, they have a good idea regarding what is contained in your post. You can improve the rankings of your tag pages simply by optimizing them. There are even SEO plugins you can use.

The content analysis has two main functions, checking your tag page and the content of both single pages and blog posts. This means you will receive detailed instructions regarding improving your content. There is also another benefit to properly tagging your posts. Once your post has been written, you may not be sure which posts you should link to. You can accomplish this by browsing through your new post tags to determine what you should be linking to.

This will help your visitors find what they want faster. If you do not have enough time to complete this process, internal linking tools are available.

In today’s world, it’s essential for businesses to have accurate records of both time and employee activity. Time-tracking and employee records can help businesses optimize their workflow, resolve issues quickly, and track expenses.

In this article, we’ll discuss the importance of time-tracking and employee records in detail and explain how you can implement them into your business. Ready to take your business to the next level? Let’s get started!

What Is Time-tracking?

Time-tracking is the process of tracking time spent working on a project or task. This can be done manually, with a timer, or through an automated system.

Time tracking will help you optimize your workflow and identify areas where you spend excessive time on tasks that could be less important. It also allows you to monitor how much work is being done by individual employees and establish benchmarks for future projects.

Employee records can also be helpful in resolving issues quickly. If an employee logs their hours incorrectly, it’s easy to track down the mistake and rectify it. This information can also be used to evaluate an employee’s productivity, as well as his or her work ethic.

Benefits of Time-tracking in Business

There are many benefits to time-tracking in a business environment. Let’s take a look at just a few:

Optimization of Workflow:

Optimizing your workflow allows you to complete more tasks in less time than if you were working inefficiently. This will save you money on expenses such as overtime pay and help improve your bottom line.

Monitoring Employee Performance:

Time tracking will help you identify areas in which your employees spend excessive time on tasks. This information can be used to evaluate an employee’s productivity, as well as his or her work ethic.

Managing Expenses:

By monitoring how much work is being done and where it’s taking place, you’ll be able to keep track of expenses and optimize your budget accordingly.

This will save you money on unnecessary staff costs and improve your company’s bottom line.

How to Track the Time of Employees

There is one particularly effective way to track time in your business. Let’s take a look at each one:

Use an Employee Time Tracking Software Application

One of the most popular methods for tracking time is to use software. This software allows you to record the hours that employees spend working on various tasks and their total amount of work completed over a day or week.

This information can be used to evaluate an employee’s productivity, as well as his or her work ethic. You can also use this software and its other valuable features, such as the ability to schedule tasks, track progress updates and create reports.

Employee tracking software generally integrates with other office automation tools, best onboarding programs and employee communication platforms. This integration allows you to keep track of benefits enrollment, payroll processing, vacation requests, and more.

What is Employee Record?

An employee record is a document that includes information about an individual’s employment with a business. This document can include the employee’s name, address, contact information, and other important data.

Also, in many cases, an employee record will include timekeeping information such as the number of hours worked each day.

Benefits of Employee Records in Business

There are several benefits to using employee records in your business. Some of the main reasons include the following:

1. The ability to keep track of hours worked.

This information is essential for verifying an employee’s timekeeping accuracy, as well as for billing and other financial purposes.

2. The ability to ensure that employees are compensated correctly for their work.

By tracking the total hours worked each week, you can ensure that employees receive the correct amount of pay per hour worked.

3. The ability to monitor an employee’s progress and skills.

Tracking an employee’s progress over time can help you evaluate his or her strengths and weaknesses. This information can help you determine whether the employee is a good fit for your business and if he or she needs additional training.

4. The ability to keep track of work-related injuries.

If an employee experiences a work-related injury, it is important to be able to document the event quickly and accurately. By using an employee record, you will be able to do this easily.

5. The ability to provide employment records to the employee or his or her attorney.

If an employee believes that he or she has been wronged at work, it is important to have access to employment records to support your case. Using an employee record document will allow you to provide this information easily and without confusion.

6. The ability to comply with government employment regulations.

Many governments require businesses to maintain employee records in order to comply with specific employment laws. Using an Employee Record system, you can easily meet these requirements.

Conclusion

It’s no surprise that time-tracking and employee records are essential for every successful business. As a result, you will be able to understand where your employees are slacking off, their performance targets, and how they can improve on them.

Time-tracking also helps businesses avoid financial issues due to staff absenteeism or late payments when payroll dates fall behind. Therefore, it is safe to say that just by keeping track of employee performance properly, you can increase productivity while enhancing workplace efficiency simultaneously!
