I’m Lisa, founder and creator of Indigowares and mother of two. Founded Indigowares in 2016
Before starting Indigowares, I spent 20 years training and working as a textile designer around the world, from Brighton to Italy to New York and then back to London. A lot of that time was spent in fast paced highly driven design studios creating new prints and embellishments for fashion houses. During this time, I grew really disillusioned with the fast fashion industry. I knew that I needed to bring the focus back to making pattern – which was always my passion – and the traditional processes and history behind it.
The idea for Indigowares initially came because I had taken up indigo dyeing as a hobby while taking time off to raise my kids. I fell completely in love as I learned about its magical dyeing processes, as well as the cultures that did and still do use it.
And as I grew my knowledge of traditional indigo dyeing and how to run an online business, Indigowares grew alongside that. The goal is always to create something that is timeless, seasonless, and keeps traditional processes alive with a contemporary twist.
Here at Indigowares, I want to share the magic of handmade, artisan clothing and why everyone deserves a piece in their wardrobe. Imagine knowing the hands that crafted your garment, the time and skill poured into its creation. This connection fosters a deeper appreciation, making you want to cherish it and ensure it becomes a treasured companion for years to come.
Our brand is for kindred spirits who value:
Artisan-made luxury: Indigowares offers a unique blend of tradition and contemporary design, a little slice of luxury crafted with love.
Clothes that feel good: Imagine slipping into a piece that’s not just comfortable, but whispers a story of care and artistry.
Supporting communities: By choosing handmade, you empower artisans and keep their age-old traditions alive.
A greener future: We prioritize sustainable practices, using natural dyes and minimizing waste.
Resurrecting age-old traditions: We celebrate the artistry and cultural significance of traditional textile craft.
Indigowares is more than just clothing; it’s a conscious choice, a celebration of slow fashion, and a commitment to a world where beauty thrives alongside responsibility.
Our main mission at Indigowares is to share the story of the artists behind our garments. In addition to our popular kantha and vintage textile items, we specialise in indigo dyeing and block printing. Our mission is to create garments that are completely traceable, straight back to the very soil that grew the dye we use. We draw on traditional indigo, shibori, and printing techniques to bring a sense of craft and history into modern design.
Indigowares has ancient roots with a modern soul. Our pieces are created for anyone with an interest and appreciation of hand craft, slow fashion, and finding beauty and art within nature and the everyday. It’s such a joy to get pictures of our loyal customers wearing Indigowares; not only is it great to see these treasures out in the world, but our customers are always in the most beautiful settings – nature, exhibits, scenic strolls on the town.
