He holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biblical Counseling and has dedicated his life to equipping individuals, churches, and Christian leaders with biblical truth for counseling and discipleship.
Dr. Tyler currently serves as the Director of Gateway Biblical Counseling and Training Center in Fairview Heights, Illinois. Gateway is a ministry devoted to restoring hope and direction to hurting individuals and families through the Word of God. It also functions as a teaching center where pastors, counselors, and laypeople receive biblical counseling training that is rooted in the authority and power of Scripture.
In addition to his role at Gateway, Dr. Tyler is the Dean of the Biblical Counseling Department at Master’s International University of Divinity in Evansville, Indiana. In this capacity, he trains and mentors men and women who are preparing for ministry and biblical counseling work around the world. His academic and ministerial leadership has helped shape a generation of counselors who reject the compromise of integrating secular psychological theories with biblical truth.
Dr. Tyler is certified by the International Association of Biblical Counselors (IABC) and currently serves on the IABC Board of Directors. He is passionate about maintaining the clarity and conviction of biblical counseling in a time when many in the church are turning to psychology for answers that God has already provided in His Word. Through IABC and other ministries, Dr. Tyler regularly leads workshops, conferences, and training events focused on biblical counseling, pastoral care, and Christian discipleship.
A former pastor with decades of experience, Dr. Tyler understands the unique challenges church leaders face in counseling hurting people. Having once struggled with how to help those dealing with depression, anxiety, grief, addiction, and broken relationships, he now uses his background to encourage pastors and equip them to provide soul care grounded in Scripture.
Dr. Tyler is also a prolific author, having written and co-authored numerous books that challenge the growing trend of labeling sin as sickness and replacing repentance with therapy. His writings are known for their clarity, biblical soundness, and pastoral sensitivity. His titles include:
• Jesus Christ: Self-Denial or Self-Esteem? — a biblical critique of the self-esteem movement.
• Self-Esteem: Are We Really Better Than We Think? — exploring the clash between biblical humility and modern self-worth ideologies.
• The Second Coming of Jesus Christ: Oil, Terrorism, and Nuclear War — a compelling look at end-times prophecy in light of current global events.
• God’s Funeral: Psychology Trading the Sacred for the Secular — exposing the ways psychology has displaced biblical truth in the church.
• Grief: Victory Over a Lonely Darkness — offering practical and spiritual help for those navigating grief and loss through the comfort of Christ.
• Deceptive Diagnosis: When Sin Is Called Sickness (co-authored) — challenging the popular trend of medicalizing sinful behavior and rejecting biblical responsibility.
• ADHD: Deceptive Diagnosis (co-authored) — addressing parenting, discipline, and the biblical view of child behavior in contrast to modern psychological labels.
Through his books, Dr. Tyler seeks to reclaim ground lost to the secular counseling movement and to reassert the life-transforming power of God’s Word.
His writings, counseling resources, and book store are available online at www.davidtylerbooks.com. Many of his books are used in training courses and counseling programs across the United States and beyond.
Dr. Tyler’s life mission can be summed up in one conviction: The Bible is sufficient. It is sufficient for salvation, sanctification, and for every problem of the soul. Whether through one-on-one counseling, classroom instruction, or conference speaking, he remains committed to proclaiming that hope and healing are found in Christ, not in a diagnosis
